A "puente" would be when there is an official holiday on a Thursday or a Tuesday and people choose to have an extra day off to make it a long weekend. In the case of schools some of the puentes are optional. Some will have a puente while others will not. They can choose to save the day for a specific local holiday.

Just a little more information on puentes. Spanish employers usually allow their employees to take two puente days in addition to the 14 statutory holiday days. So last year, for example, there were four Fiesta days in the Madrid area that fell on either a Tuesday or a Thursday and employees were allowed to `puente´ the two of their choice to have a long weekend. Of course, employers will have the discretion of not allowing all employees to choose the same dates if it´s detrimental to their business. Schools will have to mutually agree their puentes.

Hi,
Thank you Fresita and Cielito Lindo! So as not to confuse, a "puente" in employment or education is when the extra day is tagged on at the beginning or the end of a holiday to form a "long weekend". Got it, (I think). Karma on its way.
Regards,
Carol

Hello Carol
I am sorry, i hadn't read this thread until now.
"puente" in Spain, is when there are two holidays with a working day between them. All the companies have to make a "calendario laboral" (schedule) in which they have to lay down the hours people have to work during the whole year. Sometimes, because of the timetable, if there weren't free days people would work more hours than the established ones, so, they have to give "puentes" and it means that when there is a working day between two holidays they give it as a free day. In my case, i have all the "puentes" there are in the year, so, sometimes, if there is a holiday on Tuesday, you have free from Saturday to Tuesday. Once there were holidays on Tuesday and Thursday and they gave us Monday (because it was between Sunday and Tuesday), Wednesday (because it was between Tuesday and Thursday) and Friday (because it was between Thursday and Saturday) so, at the end we had all the week free

Hola marisol!
Thank you for this explanation.
You must have a very nice boss!:D
To return to the original question about the fiesta Las Angustias in Ayamonte, I guess it is only fair to say there will be fiesta before and after the feast day. The itinerary (calendario) will be published closer to the date.
Regards,
Carol
