Hola y buenos dias,
I see The Oracle homepage has a new article on Semana Santa. Has anyone subscribed to the newsletter?
Saw this article in local website to do with environmentalist groups lobbying local government's "abuse/misuse" of agricultural land for second home developments ie. Puente Esuri. Don't know how to translate it with google. I thought sign in the photo, apparently taken from the border bridge, was interesting: "Aqui empieza Marbella": http://www.ayamonte.org/modules/news...hp?storyid=395
The thing with building on agricultural land, in my humble opinion, is that not many farmers actually want to remain as farmers in this day and age. How does one think the landscape remains green and orderly? Not by Mother Nature herself, but also by the farmer. At Puente Esuri, was the land farmed for agricultural purposes, or for livestock? Was the land ever left unattended by the farmer? I don't know. The ecosystem along this stretch of riverbank may well change, but the marismas remain protected. It remains to be seen how laborious will be the upkeep of the golf courses; water shortages will effect all areas, town & countryside. This part of the countryside will be managed differently from its former purpose, but at least it will be looked after.
Regards,
Carol

Have not been online for a while as I've been extremely busy.
I am glad that everyone is enjoying the thread and exchanging memories.
The Semana Santa processions were fantastic - it was my first time seeing them and I must admit I turned into a Pasos groupy! (pasos is the float that is carried)
I'll get the pictures on here soon when I get them off the camera.
I saw a couple of processions in Ayamonte and one in Huelva - what a great atmosphere!
The next thing to go to is the April Fair in Seville, which is another huge festival and then all the Romeria's start - its just one big party and excuse to have a few bevies!

Tilly :)

The Oracle site looks finished now and also has email address on contact page.
Photos are on their way.
It has been pouring with rain here in Ayamonte today - miserable grey sky and a bit cold. :( Cannot really complain though as it's usually glorious!

Hola!
Looks like the tables have been turned (momentarily), and the rain falleth on the Costa de la luz, while, here in the UK, it is sunshine ++(well... not at 11pm). How strange...
I heard that it rains traditionally during the Feria de Abril in Sevilla - has the Feria started or will it start next week (2 weeks after Semana santa, which would be May then... )? After the Feria, the temperature rises.
Read a bit about the Feria de gambas at Punta Umbria (yumm!) Anyone been to it?
Buenas noches y hasta manana,
Carol

Interesting article on english spoken in spanish schools, with a primary school in Cartaya piloting the scheme.

Hi Tilly,
I could have this totally wrong, but... :o I think the choice of name is unfortunate. Doesn't lulu mean (hacer lulu = orinar = do a #1) in children's lingo?
Otherwise, I've enjoyed the read!

I have spoken to my Spanish friend and he said that Lulu does not mean #1 in childrens lingo but popo means #2! :)
I have spent the past couple of days on the beach as it has been a scorching bank holiday weekend. The marina/ commercial centre at Isla Canela has been buzzing and the beach has been busy. I love it here!
photos to come soon when I have re-sized them. Hope you all had a good weekend.
Carol - so sorry to here about your problems at Costa Esuri.

Hi Tilly,
Thanks for your concern. :)
I'll bet someone out there has heard of "lulu" before? Perhaps it depends on which region one comes from? :o O.k. enough already with the potty-talk.
Did you get to see Sevilla during the Feria de abril? Or, did you get to see my favourite Carmen Sevilla, either in Sevilla at the Feria, or in Huelva at the Feria de gambas (Punta Umbria)? She always makes me smile, such a wonderful star of the cinema/tv.
Regards,
Carol

I did not get to the April Fair but I am going to the Jerez Horse Fair tomorrow so I will post photos of that asap. The Romerias are starting and the infamous Villablanca celebrations start on the 19th. Aparently its four days of eating, drinking and partying!

Yes, how exciting for them - http://www.theoraclecostadelaluz.com...page/Itemid,1/

The day that i went to the Jerez Horse Fair there was nothing to see! We drove there had some luch and a look around then went on to Cadiz. We picked the wrong day to go!
Since then we have been to the Villablanca Romeria, which was a great weekend. The Flamenco dresses and traditional costumes were a joy to see. The women looked beautiful and the men very proud.
This weekend was the Fun 'n' Sun Harley Davidson meet in Monte Gordo. There were some good bands, a stunt show and hundreds of Harleys to have a look at. On Saturday there was a parade where they all crossed the bridge into Spain and cruised around Ayamonte and then back over to Portugal.
The here weather is amazing and a couple of days have been so hot that i thought I might melt!
I have attached a couple of photos of the Romeria.

Tilly :)

It´s a pity you were too early for the Jerez Horse Fair. On the first day (7th May) it starts at 10.00 pm for the illumination of the lights and fireworks. I've been to loads of different Ferias is this is definitely the best. Still, there's always next year!

The Madera Bar/ Pizzeria in Villablanca was the venue for Flamenco lessons every Monday night but I am not sure if they are still happening, I will find out and let you know. Miguel's daughter was teaching the Men first and then the women. Some of them were putting it into practise at the Romeria, which was great to see.

What type of flamenco do you want to learn? There are all sorts. If you want to dance at the Ferias then you will need to learn SEVILLANAS. Make sure you learn the right one!

I'm going on the bus!!!
I went to Huelva yesterday to see the biggest brotherhood in the province leaving for El Rocio - it was amazing. Everyone looked so beautiful.

Hi Tilly! y buenos dias a todos,
I look forward to hearing about your bus journey!
As the camino is a religious experience for many, it wouldn't seem right somehow to take photos. However (perhaps contradictory), I've been watching the preparations on the "Espana directo" (TVe internacional) program on Sky digital 802. Yes, it it amazing. There's news about the Rocio 2006 in the Huelva informacion website, too: www.huelvainformacion.es

Carol

Hola!

Does anyone know if the new El Corte Ingles store or the Hypercor supermarket have opened in Ayamonte? We heard that a new shopping centre was due to open in 2006 and we're just about to furnish our new apartment... (yes, we're very excited)! :)

Hola,
The El Corte Ingles store has not opened yet. The nearest one is in Huelva. The commercial Centre is still being built at the moment so I think if it is finished this year it will be late in the year.

Thanks for the info! We may well still make the trip to Huelva - at least it gives us an excuse to look round the market there. It's one of our favourites (especially the fish bit). Have you been there?
