Hi all, so sorry for the lack of replies- what a bad time we've had - hence no pc, dosh woooo don't bear thinking about! Anyways, found out what it was for, a driving under the influence Warrent for arrest from 2002! He went to court the next day and was given a bank account number to pay at a Banco prior to leaving the country. Think it was for 630euro. He only had his credit card to pay- but the bank refused to accept this. I tried in vain at this end to pay through a bank transfer-which was incredibly difficult as they needed a swift number etc which he wasn't given!! I found on the web an exact address etc enough to get it sent through which enabled him to be able to catch his return flight back home!!!What a polava!! BUT THIS IS NOT THE END!!!A few days later my bank sent me a letter to say it hadn't been paid due to lack of info!!! OMG still not paid!! Tried and tried to find out but unable to read Spanish!? So, sent the money via transfer to his brothers account in Spain to pay.....ahh....done......NO!!!!!!!!!!Recently found out the brother was behind on rent and used it to pay for it!!!!SO ITS STILL NOT PAID!!!!
IS THERE ANY POSSIBLE WAY WE CAN PAY THIS DAMN FINE ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!SHOULD I WRITE TO THE ADDRESS WE HAVE AND ASK????EXPLAIN????HOW FOOLISH DO WE FEEL??? ANY POSSIBLE HELP PLEASE????????????:(

They can only pass on the info if they have permission of the arrested person.
Email the nearest consulate to where you have to pay the fine and see if they can advise you.

PS, tell him not to use his passport. ;-)

My advice; don't go back to Spain on holiday :D

Things like this are notoriously difficult to resolve, not really sure what you can do other than risking it, but making sure you have the cash next time.

Arrested Dec 2nd and in court next day for non payment of fine. Where is husband now? I would have hoped they would have kept him locked up until fine was paid?

Whilst I agree that it does appear that the guy has crossed the line at some stage, the available facts are very sketchy and who knows how accurate.
I think its a bit early to have the guy hung drawn and quartered on the basis of what is shown.
Maybe things are worse than appears, maybe not.
Ive heard all the stuff about ppl leaving their brains behind in the UK and often its fair comment, but at times like this a bit compassion doesnt come amiss, even if just for his wife,....... at least until the affair is sorted.

If you read the thread, He was arrested and fined for driving under the influence, then left the country without paying the fine,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,So sorry, no, I have no compassion whatsoever!

Re: Arrested in spain! help please!

I agree the guy deserves to pay the price for whatever he did and things have or will take their due course.
However who knows,he may have moved on and learnt his lesson since then, so it may be wrong to write him off as an idiot on the strength of one stupid mistake.
As I said he who be without sin..............................
In any event it doesnt really help his Mrs much either at a time like this.
Hopefully lessons have been learnt without the need to rub noses in it years later.

Re: Arrested in spain! help please!

Guy went to bank...bank wouldn't accept credit card. Last time I looked, every bank has a cash point. All rather lame. But not as lame as drink-driving.

And, Dick Dasterdly, there are NO "stupid mistakes" when it come to driving under the influence. It is not a "sin", it is a crime. It was a choice, with the idea behind, of; "what are the chances of me being stopped"? Along with the "what are the chances of me hitting someone?".

The guy broke the law, ran away, and then let it ride for 6 years. Having witnessed death first hand caused by "a little tipple for the road", excuse my total lack of sympathy.

Re: Arrested in spain! help please!

While I totally agree with all the comments regarding drink driving I also know its very unfair to sit in judgement on something someone did. As someone else said, "without sin" and all that and I have sat in enough pubs over the years and watched some of the most sanctimonious people have "drink or two" and drive their families home after a Sunday lunch session.

I do think that if the OP did an intentional skip and tried to hide the whole thing and get off with it then its about time to face the music and do the right thing, responsibility is something we all have to face up to!

What I don't agree with is the whole "you could kill someone" attitude.

Do you know how many deaths result from drink driving compared to say secondary smoking?

Funnily enough, yes I do. However smoking is not yet a criminal offence. And a non smoker can usually get out of the way of smoke.

I was more suggesting that the amount of money spent on catching drink drivers because of the fear of someone getting killed is disproportionate to the amount of money spent on dealing with real deaths. The traffic division is massive now, and like someone said they can find you if you go a week over your tax disc, know when you don't have an MOT or insurance now, spend upwards of £20,000 for those little cameras that are now springing up all over towns and cities manned 24 hours a day, but they can't even keep tabs on a pedophile who is registered yet gets a job in a school!

I know its an emotive issue but it needs to be discussed without emotion, otherwise it just gets clouded.

For fear that we are digressing from the OP original question but to add to this line of the thread.

As a non smoker from a smoking family, I choose to visit them and I take the risk of any injury, as a driver I choose not to drink, I love my licence to much and I accept that when I am driving I am in something that can potential kill and it is the right of anyone else using the road or path to be able to use it safely.

There are enough idiots on our roads, enough arrogant people who "do not think it will happen to them" and enough victims, I have No problem people drinking and even less with driving just do not agree with doing both together.

And as the original OP's thread is about her OH being arrested because of drink/driving it also shows that you do not need to kill someone to have a victim, just the worry, stress and now inconvenience of (NOT) being able to visit Spain is a clear indication that she is a victim and as such deserves not to be victimised against.

Wow, are you sat next to Tim?!

(thats a joke by the way, I feel I need to start explaining this to people!)

I know all that, but I did say.... "compared to say secondary smoking"

I could have chosen any number of things to compare it with, including speeding, which kills a substantial number of people, and, is a criminal offense.

You are correct in everything you say, but that is not the polices fault, that has more to do with people who have nothing else to do with there time but think about the criminal and their "human rights". Joy for human rights, used as it should be against the most barbaric of treatments it is a life saver (not that the countries who have human rights isses give a monkeys about brussels and what they say) it is those that have no kids, nothing to do but drink tea with the ladies group and have no understanding of reality that make our lives hell.

Prisoners get better treatment than the average guy that works his socks off, the guy who kills someone in his car for what ever reason has a slap on the wrist, kids can tourment teachers, authority and home life, but heaven forbid they be told off for it. Deal with the do gooders in our society, allow the law to do its job, teachers to do theres and parents to do there's, then maybe the authorities will be able to deal with what their paid to do,

The nanny state, wish nanny would look after herself and leave the rest of us alone.

Try telling that to the woman who was on the TV last night, lost her two little boys and her husband is crippled due to some drunk who hit them up the arse at 95 mph and pushed them down an embankment.

and you know full well that people die every day from speeding.

I am not arguing FOR drink driving here people, I am simply saying that using the death argument is a little alarmist given the sheer amount of people killed on the roads, the amount of people who ACTUALLY drink drive and how that relates to other deaths...

Are we not digressing again, We all have our opinions and how we view rights and wrongs, and in defence of the OP's OH, attitudes there are only just getting somewhere near the UK now.

It was 6 yrs ago and hopefully with age comes some knowledge, poor woman has been through enough with family that is not quite so trustworthy, a system that still has to find the abbacus before it can get anywhere near the computer and the embarrassment of having in effect her dirty washing discected in public on a forum, lets give her break and agree that she at least needs a thumbs up for asking for help,

rugbymat, if you have the figures to show that drink driving isnt dangerous then please use them.

This link shows 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured each year in the UK through drink driving. That is 3,000 too many

http://www.drinkdrivingfacts.com/dri...ing_facts.aspx

Taking that risk is irresponsible and the drink driver should be punished

In fairness to Matt I dont think he said that, he was simply saying that there are other issues that are dangerous too.

In any case, dangerous or not, its against the law and there for should be punished quite rightly

The guy was drinking and driving. He left the country hoping that nothing comes of it and therefore disrespected the Spanish system.

Most people can withdraw cash on a credit card.

There are plenty of ways of getting money sent abroad.

It is a case of what goes around comes around.

No sympathy.
