Too true! I hate the winter with a passion, dark evenings, having to pile on loads of clothes before venturing out etc. However I can't take the excessive Spanish heat in the summer. :( If only we could have around 25c degrees all the year round I'd be quite happy! |

Much the same myself, thats why come June every year I'm on my bike to more comfortable Northern climes. |

I was not referring to this specific thread, but to many I have seen over the past two years for instance, including winters springs summers and autumns.
Too hot, too cold too wet, too windy......etc.etc. I actually have 2 electric blankets and a hot water bottle in Spain, but none of those in the UK, however thats mainly down to house construction and insulation factors, rather than the weather, where I confess Spain has a slight edge, for most of the year at least. As my Swedish friends keep telling me,.."There is no such thing as bad weather,.. only bad clothes". Though I'm not entirely convinced, (my UK locatiion being on a windswept Northern hilltop 1000 ft asl., snow in June), it must also be said that you can always dress against the cold, but it's somewhat difficult to dress against excessive heat. 1976 was a great year, and a brilliant summer, just like they were supposed to be. |

Much the same myself, thats why come June every year I'm on my bike to more comfortable Northern climes. but come winter I cant cope with cold. All the wood, clothes etc could not keep me warm. Same in UK. Massive bills. Open fire, central heating. Double glazing....the lot. A miserable life. Had a lovely day out today by the dried up riverbed. Beautiful weather. Not moaning. Would never moan about living in a place which to me is my "HEAVEN ON EARTH". Just dont like the cold but we dont leave when the climes are too much. We put up with them cos this is where we live.:) |

<Well, there are things you can do to alleviate the heat. >
What we do is to make sure that we're in the UK during July & August! That works well  |

I had passed my eleven plus and got entry to the best girls high school in Plymouth. I dont really remember the heat but the grass in our garden looked worse than our garden does here. |

Well, there are things you can do to alleviate the heat. Don't let the sun shine in thru the windows, don't keep the doors open and as a last resort, have some air con.
Get up early, do all physical work early or late and relax in the heat of the day. Even then after a long spell of excess heat all the stonework/concrete has heated up so much it prevents adequate cooling on an evening without expensive aircon. Best Summer of all in the UK was 59. Started earlier than in 75/76 and was still 80 farenheit or 26 plus centigrade early October. |

In other words be a prisoner in your own house virtually all day.

For me a typical red hot summer's day goes like this. Get up with the sun, because that's easiest, and most comfortable. Shut all the windows as soon as the outside air temp rises above the internal. Go out on the terrace and breakfast, after breakfast do the watering on the terrace, and anything else that needs doing. I spend all day in the garden, and every time I get a bit too hot, I go in the house and have a cold drink. The tiled floor is cool all day, because we keep hot air outside as much as possible. I use the fan when I'm hot, and should it get too much I'll go and sit in the bedroom and read for half an hour with the aircon on. It's like that all day. I'm certainly not a prisoner in my own house in the summer. I am in the winter when it rains too much to gt out in the garden, but that's another story. |

Different ppl.have different temperature thresholds. I have tried several times over many years to become acclimatized to the Summer heat without success, and always ended up trapped in my own house with the cooler on. As for the 75/76 UK Summers I recall that all our grazing land was burned off and brown, yet the surprising thing was that none of the livestock lost condition at all, I suppose partly due to the fact that little energy is required in those temperatures. |
