Re: Anti-social behaviour
errr...I don't live in the campo.
I actually am pissed off with all these endless comparisons between the UK and Spain. I doubt I would ever mention the UK were it not for these endless "the UK is shite, Spain is perfect" posts all the time. I put the odd crime facts on just to point out that no country is perfect, infact most countries have the same problems now, it's just the world we live in. I live in a nice residential area and were I to live in a bubble I could pretend to myself that Spain is a wonderful shangrila

Re: Anti-social behaviour
There are no street dogs in Barcelona. Again this comes from you living in the campo.
I dont know why you keep highlighting individual crimes, what does that show? Absolutely nothing. I lived in Barcelona for 2 years, it is an incredibly safe city. You see young people and women walking on their own at any time of day with no fear.
In the major tourist areas, tourists are robbed because they are sitting ducks waving around their wallets, bags and expensive cameras. If you dont look like a tourist you most likely wont get robbed.
Spain is a safe country. As someone who watches the Spanish news and reads the papers I'm sure you saw the latest crime figures that showed another drop in crime and that Spain consistently rates as one of the safest countries in Europe.

There are very organised gangs waiting to pounce on tourists and Spanish alike.
taking your money out to buy a coffee is not exactly waving it about.
That is like saying that women who get raped were asking for it because the were out late, short skirt etc.
That is a terrible attitude to more or less say that the victims were asking for it, blame the robbing ba**ards not the victims.
Spain may well have a lower crime rate, but dont try to get your point across by coming out with such drivel............

You dont like UK/Spain comparisons and I dont like when people say negative generalisations about Spain that dont align with my experiences.
Btw, I would say the FEAR of crime is a much bigger problem in the UK than the actual crime itself. It seems the media makes people scared witless.

Yes TBH I have never felt unsafe in either country. Though I am always cautious.

Re: Anti-social behaviour
That is not true, and gives a truly false impression, My father in laws brother and his wife were victims of a robbery in Barcelona, they are Spanish and do not go flashing thier wallets around.
There are very organised gangs waiting to pounce on tourists and Spanish alike.

I didnt mean to imply that it was the tourists fault. And of course anyone can be a victim of crime. Apologies
But also Barcelona is not exactly the crime central that is reported in the British press.

I am not just going by the British press, I am quite intergrated into Spanish society, you know.
When I meet up with others, someone always has a tale to tell about someone, having thier bag, mobile, moeny stolen.
A friend who had been to Lugo, had his car broken into one night, along with 5 other cars. No hire cars or tourists involved all Spanish.

The thing is most of the victims in Barcelona are Spanish, they may not even be tourists, some are travelling on business, visiting family etc.

For that reason, it is a good idea to carry little cash and to use secure carparks in cities over night.
However, overall crime rates and in particular violent crime is relatively low in Spain meaning most likely the worst that will happen is the inconvenience of having your wallet stolen or car broken it to. No reason why not to walk the streets alone at night!

I don't doubt it, Spain is ranked number 1 in the world for personal robberies you know

I could flip this theory over and say that violent crime usually (not talking about domestic) takes place at night, where gangs gather, outside pubs and clubs. Usually drink or drugs are involved. most of the victims seem to be young males.
So it should only affect a small percentage of the poputaion in the UK
This type of crime never seems to happen to old ladies and housewives going about their business,
However the personal robbery crime affects these people, who are going about their day to day lives in Spain. And we must not forget these people are not on the fringes of "dobious" lifstyles, as a large number in the violent UK crimes are.
A lot is gang on gang violence.
So we could say that a 55 ish year old woman is more likely to be a victim in Spain than in the UK.
Is that a fair statment?

Agree, it does sound like he is blaming the tourists. I saw a "Comando Actualidad" programme about Barcelona, and it didn't come across to me as the crime free city that some here would have us believe. The bag snatching etc on the Ramblas was incredible, so open. And even those that were caught, were soon released and back on the streets again in no time. It has the same problems that most cities suffer, crime, prostitution etc, just wish people wouldn't try to convince us it hasn't.

The following website I think has been quoted before. This lists the total number of crimes per country. As you will see the crime rate in the UK is an incredible 4 times higher than that in Spain! (taking in account the different populations).
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cr...mes-per-capita
Number of crimes per year:
US = 11.9 million
UK = 6.5 million
Spain = 0.9 million
Number of crimes per person each year:
UK = 8.5%
US = 8.0%
Spain = 2.3%
I didnt actually think crime was that bad in the UK, but seems I was wrong.

I never google for fighures about crime or anything else.
I was only quoting your post about Spain having the alrgest number of personal robberies and pointing out that that type of crime affects and involves more ordinary victims, as opposed to violent crime in the uk which is quite often gang on gang.
Somone having their spade stolen from the shed might be classed as a crime in the uk.
