Default Another blasted TV question.

OK, so I'm getting my head round all the stuff out there and now I see in addition to LDE, LCD, and Plasma, there is Neoplasma.

Please, what is this? (I know it's 'new' plasma) but is it really different from 'old' plasma?

Thanks.

Expensive toys at 5000 euro a shot.
No doubt that will drop in years to come if they are a success.
Interesting that they are already shutting down production on the present range of plasma.
Does that mean they are admitting the present plasma range is second best to LCD ?

I've heard rumours for quite a while that the Japs had some new TV technology lined up ready to knock everything else incl HD into a cocked hat not to mention obsolete.
Infinity to 1 contrast,..not sure I can get my head around that one either, but in any event if their claims are anything like accurate the new sets should be pretty damned good.

really would like one or two of those multi-source screens they use in CSI Miami etc, clear view, grab with your hand and move around etc. Distinct advantage over a melamine white board and a felt pen

problem is that technical advances used to be counted in decades now it seems like less than a year, you've hardly found out about it before it becomes obsolete. Take the HP Touchpad only 3 months since launch and the rug pulled. Microsoft's Kin pulled after 6 weeks. OK no one really wanted them on already saturated markets that would not take another product, but they are in the same category as an MOD product, obsolete before its finished the design stage.

and I remember thinking Stereo wouldn't catch on and kept buying mono lp's

Well, I was in the shop, and there was a plasma and a neo plasma side by side. There was a visible difference in picture contrast, and the price was 100 more, at about 900 for the neo, 800 for the straight plasma.

Even with auto tune and a common aerial you can still adjust:-
Contrast
Backlight
Brightness
Colour
Hue
Colour temperature
Sharpness

and possibly more, but I guess you would not make adjustments that made the more expensive model look inferior

A brief demo of the new plasma technology.
Better picture and more efficient according to the write-up.

I looked at another link and was quite surprised to see that plasma TVs use as much as 700 watts in default mode, as purchased from the shop, which seems quite excessive to me.
Bearing in mind that lots of ppl. just seem to leave their sets running all day long, regardless of whether they're watching or not, they must run up a hell of an electricity bill.

I'm presuming that if you want to switch the TV off to save power, then if the freesat box is on and the TV is switched right off, then programmes will still record.

Correct.

Plasma uses much more power than LCD/LED which is one of the reasons they why they are going out of favour. LCD/LED (same screen just a different backlight) have caught up fast in price and quality. They also work better in well lit rooms compared to Plasma.

Also Plasma TV's get very warm so when my one bits the dust I will not get another, plus they weigh a ton.
