Should I Really Join Facebook? (Priceless)

When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, my 13 grand kids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.

The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud

I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead. Well, it was not a good relationship...
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.


To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions, checking bathrooms, and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings


The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the Supermarket. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me.

Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do fart a lot."

P.S. I know some of you are not over 70. I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are.

We senior citizens don't need anymore gadgets. The TV remote and the garage door remote are about all we can handle.

I agree , I have just got a new smart phone and apart from filling it full of favourite music I can,t see what real advantages it offers over the simple phones of years ago.
I still keep a simple diary ( quicker to use than an electronic version ) which also is my address book.
I have a Garmin somewhere in the car .
I refuse to use the electronic checkouts in the supermarkets because they do not give me a discount for doing their work.
We have so many gadgets and gizzomos purchased over the years that were we to add up the total costs would probably give us a heart attack.
I will need a new laptop to replace this one which is steam powered but where to start ????

Well I first realized something wasn't quite right quite a few years ago when I once picked up the TV remote and began trying to make a phone call,.... though the kids thought it was hilarious.

I fell out with the satnav lady from day one, when she sent me down a wrong road.
I cussed her something rotten and threatened to chuck the stupid tart out of the car.
Don't think she ever forgave me, cos whenever I need her most in a busy town centre or such she'll likely send me the wrong way down a one way street or else try to lose me altogether up a cul-de-sac.

As for Supermarkets.
I've had more loyalty cards than you could shake a stick at, sometimes three or four for one shop alone, yet I've still managed to lose the lot, so I just sadly shake my head now when the checkout lady asks if I have a one or would like a one.
Far better they all just gave us maximum discount in the first instance, I would have thought, but obviously not, that would make life too simple.

As for digi cameras, I have quite a collection laid around in their boxes totally unused at home. I don't like to put them on ebay as they were pressies from family and close friends, meanwhile I'm happy to stick with my very basic ancient camera/phone as long as it works and I don't lose it.

My kids told me an ipad was a must, so I foolishly lashed out on a one but haven't got even the faintest clue regarding most of it's functions and my hands being a bit dodgy I have a serious problem with the screen keyboard even using one of those pens, so I'm happy to be back with my ancient laptop which much like myself is something of a museum piece now. :(

Graham called the woman on his GPS Nagging Nelly because she kept on telling him that he was driving too fast when he was not. He was the person in the house who liked electrical gadgets so I have inherited a load of things that are now sitting idle. Pen and paper for me every time.

I call mine 'Hyacinth' - I'm still waiting for her to say 'Mind the cyclist'!

Must say I do put everything I need to remember on my Calendar - it gives me 12 hours notice, or a week if I need to make/buy/send a birthday card.

As for the rest - I do without. I don't even know what a 'smart phone' or an Ipad is. I could Google it I suppose.

I can check prices of an item all over my area by just scanning a bar code
I can identify pieces of music by holding the phone up to the sound
I can book and monitor a car hire booking
I can review and book a hotel in an area if I suddenly decide to stay somewhere overnight
I can find my wife if I lose her, as she has an iPhone too and it locates it
I can convert units of curency weight etc etc
I can do my banking securely
I can use Paypal
I have a language translator
I can book train tickets
I can take HDR photographs
I can be anywhere in the world, and with my SIP account and an internet connection can make phone calls anywhere for pennies per minute

And more

£20 a month including unlimited calls and unlimited texts

The first "mobile" I remember came in a big box which you had to carry over your shoulder. It was £2500 in the mid eighties.

If there's one thing I can't stand it's these bloody know it all whizz kids who stand in a queue for hours on end to pay through the nose to be first to use the latest hi tech model which is only marginally different to it's predecessor. :cool:

I prefer to talk to real people, if you do virtually everything via small box of electronics you will end up with very little human contact apart from Robert ( Rajesh ) in Bangalore who you call when it stops working.

I need glasses for reading and I need glasses for driving and I need glasses when the sun shines. I've got an iPad, but I need to go to Specsavers for iPad glasses before I can use it properly.

I can use my mobile phone because I know where the green and red buttons are, but I need binoculars for texting.

If someone had told me back in the day when I left school that in 2012 I would be able to stand just about anywhere in the world and with a gadget no bigger than a credit card I would be able to call anyone, anywhere, take and send photos, videos, buy clothes, cars even houses, order concert tickets, check my bank and make transfers, navigate my way to any point on the globe, watch films, listen to music, play games, read internet forums, set up a social networking site, search for anything that ever existed and learn what it is/was, watch the news, switch appliances on in my house, even it was thousands of miles away, I would have said, 'What the hell is a credit card?' :rofl:

really have no problems with modern technology, remember the Sinclair digital watch launch and thinking how brilliant an idea and how soon will it be before we would have it with a phone on it. (although I still prefer an analogue watch)

but it would be nice if we didn't have to keep having all those incompatible updates and upgrades overtaken by new versions that mean we have to buy a new gizmo every couple of years.

even nicer would be a proper training session on how to get the best from all the features, my Samsung Galaxy has a 126 page manual which really doesn't tell me much

Its not always the case though, most of that is manufacturer driven.
My iPhone is a 3GS. That's ancient in terms of iPhones which is now up to 5 or 6, I believe. The only problem I have with it is I cant easily find a back cover for it, the rest is fine as far as I am concerned. My camera isn't as good as the latest and I am sure there are little things mine wont do that the 6 does, but Apple would make you think its a relic that needs to be put down

I have to tell you though I just bought a smart TV. It has an additional unit you can buy that you fit on the back which means that in time you can actually upgrade your TV without buying a new one every time they bring out a new model. Mind you, you need a bloody degree to figure out how to work the thing ..... you can even log on to it when you are away to look at what is going on in your house (why you would want to do that, who knows ...)

To see if anyone has broken into it.. the new craze here is a camera outside your house and you can look at in on the internet ,,its good security for home owners in UK looking at house in Spain..Or people here looking at their house in the UK.

Its a 46", I couldnt face getting a bigger one. It has a built in toaster as well and tells me I'm a naughty boy if I access the porno channels
