.

My water varies between €40 & €80 ish a quarter very roughly, the electricity is about €90 - €100 a month. We go to the supermarket for a big shop about once to twice a month. One is usually about €100 - 110, the other about €70 - 80, and then we go to the markets inbetween for fresh veg etc. Eating out usually costs us about €12 each

- waiter in Marbella (got the job by trying every restaurant he could find until someone said yes. Speaks no Spanish.)
- hairdresser in Gibraltar (and yes she is an employee, she doesn't just rent a chair)
I also know of 2 new businesses on the Costa del Sol which seem to be doing oK (very little or no Spanish) :
- selling second-hand designer clothers
- selling books
and
- of a professional singer (with no Spanish) with contracts to sing at a club in Puerto Banus and a hotel in Marbella.
There are also quite a few poolmen, odd job men, and cleaners (with very little Spanish) operating for themselves, probably illegally. In some areas of the Costa del Sol cleaners can get 11 euros an hour. They advertise in local ex-pat papers and put cards in shop windows or flyers in cafes. Sometimes they introduce themselves to the administrator of a residential community who then recommends them to owners within that community.
There have been some threads on here about people getting IT work in Gibraltar. I think there are also some jobs going there in the gaming industry.
I agree, don't burn your boats in the UK, but maybe try Spain for a few months and look at the job market and cost of living for yourself.

I think this is a good compromise. Test the water, try your best, and see for yourself what the situation is like. All people's experiences (skill-sets, food preferences etc) will be different. What may not work for 3 other people, may work for you, and vice-versa. If however you stay in a job in the UK that seems to be the best option.

At €15 each a week, I'd struggle to keep a hamster on that! :)

All depends where you are, we're not far off that.
My mrs shops locally every day and usually spends between 4€-€5 on something for a sandwich for lunch with some fruit, plus meat/fish +veg to go with potatoes, rice or pasta etc for dinner.:D

hi all, been a while since I looked at this forum but just want to add here that I find thread really interesting & informative, & quite funny!
Lots of people have gone back to the UK for various reasons but life has not stopped in Spain, the sun is still shining & it is late October. There is work but the best jobs don´t come by that often as the people in them know what a good thing when they have it. Things are a bit expensive here but Ryanair is only a tenner return & you can stuff your pockets with BOGOF deals.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

According to this Beeb article, some folk in Barcelona (but not all) are cutting back on their 60 Euro meals in favour of frequenting the tapas bar:

Have they thought of starting a health farm, 30euros a weeks would by salad.
The punters could have salad and a lentil or 2, perhaps 3.

Water and a few lemons (detox drink)

plenty of walking, I think it could be a winner.:D

My wife’s got her ankle in plaster at the moment and I’m in charge of the kitchen. When I presented her with a really healthy fish salad a short time ago, she got quite rude and I’m on my way back into the kitchen to get the frying pan out.

My shopping bill for the last week came to 120 Euros, but there are two dogs involved too, and somehow a bottle of whiskey and some wine found its way into my trolley. At Mercadona. There were cakes and Mars bars too. And chocolate ice lollies. And two large Mosquito sprays, which are now empty.

I did the shopping again yesterday and can confirm that for two people and two dogs, albeit under a current mosquito siege, the bill comes to 120 Euros a week.

I think if you had to you could live on 4 euro a day if you prepare and cook at home, sure it would bloody boring but you would be in good health, if you go another 50 cents you could get a bottle of paint stripping vino:rofl:

Breakfast - toast/1 egg / coffee 1 euro

midday meal - baguet / ham/ tomatoe , water, 1 euro

evening meal -stewing steak / 3 veg / coffee
