Default always ill

Did anyone else find in thier first year of being here they were ill month after month. We seem to be flu, then a cold, then poo, then puke, then flue, etc etc etc. I think we must be getting used to the new water, food, dust etc! It feels like my immune system just wont buck up. I am a quite healthy person, I eat well, ( everything cooked fresh) I dont drink and i dont smoke. We all take good care of ourselves, but we seem to be constantly getting over something.
We have just got over a really nasty tummy bug this week. Any advice or suggestions.

We did suffer from really bad colds during our first winter, but I put that down to being caught unawares at how cold the houses are during winter and not being prepared.

But otherwise, no, we´ve been really healthy here. Okay everyone gets the odd cold, but that´s it. It sounds like you´ve been really unlucky. All the fresh fish, freshly squeezed oranges, etc should ensure your health is better here than in the UK.

I hope you all pick up soon!

I think that could be right, the stress of it, charging aound and sorting everything out, and exploring the area.hopefully by the summer we will have the chillin down pat, and just have to swish at the mozzies!
I wish I could induldge in the old vino, but sadly alcohol just does not agree ( I know yu are all laughing, that is the point of alcohol surely) but it does not agree in a very seroius way! So I enjoy chocolate in the vat load instead!

We were very ill and still get alot of things 4 years on. I think you pick alot of things up from the kids when they go to guaderia.

we got a lot of gastroenteritis / food poisoning in the summer so I have stopped eating tapas and so far so good. Dont eat anything with mayonaise or eggs in the hot periods either. Started to take a course of acidophilous which put back the good bacteria in the stomach Aparently!!!

Everyone is different but my stomach is very sensitive. I did love tapas, but it dont like me. There is that rule as well never eat pork when theres not an R in the month!

As an older couple who live on our own we suffer very little from illness, the first cold I had was after 14 months of being here and that was because I went back to England for 12 days, the day I flew back (travelling on my own) I was so ill I really don't know how I managed to get to Stanstead, arrived home and then spent two days in bed. OH has had the odd tummy bug but then I am not surprised given the amount of food he eats, and still stays much slimmer than me.

Maryann I think when you have a young family it seems to be much worse, children are far ever picking bugs ups and then of course they just get passed around the family a few times. Hopefully with the spring and summer just round the corner you will all benefit from it this year.

Is the tap water good for drinking? I always use bottled for drinking unless boiled. Also refuse Ice in drinks when out.

Been here nearly 6 years, and hardly any illnesses apart from odd aches and pains and a few summer colds, always just drink tap water, have not seen a doctor since we came here, touch wood!

The only problem I have is that after returning from the Uk after a few weeks away, it always takes 2 or 3 days to get things moving again.
(if you know what I mean ) I put it down to the change of water

We have been lucky just a small well cough lasted a couple of days in the year. I would think it is the children bringing things home from school. I remember it well, we were always having one thing or another.
It will pass honest
Have a good time in Gib need to go my self soon

The tap water around here is renowned for its good quality, yet our neighbour tells us that when they moved here 3 years ago he started getting headaches. He stopped drinking the tap water and drank bottled and the headaches went away.

We use bottled water, as do the locals, for everything ... if not only to stop the kettle / coffee maker furring up

I got a couple of bad coughs when I arrived, but mainly have been healthy. The only time I tend to get ill is when I visit the UK, as soon as I land the bugs come and find me, lol. I suppose we all have to get immune to the different bugs around, but generally I'm healthier here than I am in the UK.

We moved here in the December and rented a place that had been empty since the September. It was freezing and felt damp needless to say we got the most horredous colds bordering on flu. It seemed to last for weeks (it took that long to heat the apartment). A Portuguese guy told us to try an alcoholic drink called Poncho and make it like a hot toddy. It was great, really dried our colds up. It didnt cure it but did temporarily make us feel a bit better and half cut lol.

Apart from that one cold we have been fine since. No tummy bugs, colds or anything. I shouldnt say that as I will probably come down with something now.

Mind you the hayfever is due to start in the next few weeks and that over here is worse than it ever was in the Uk.

Sam

Maybe that's why there are so many peeps in their pj's, dressing gowns and slippers.....they have dragged themselves from their sickbeds to do whatever and fall straight back into bed when they get home
