If you take out Spanish insurance on your car, which of course you will eventually need to, European breakdown cover is included (by law) in the premium

When I brought my UK car to Spain last September,, a month's cover was £55. This was specific insurance to drive in Spain (as I came over on the ferry - god knows what would've happened if I tried to claim for somehting that happened on the ferry: neither in Britain, nor in Spain). I would imagine that most of that is "administration" fees, rather than the actual insurance cover. Even though I used my normal insurance company, the stingy bu**ers wouldn't refund the month of UK cover, when I was in Spain - so I paid twice for that month. I can't say how good / bad the cover was, as I didn't need to use it.

Hi Mitzyboy,
Although I was aware I have some sort of breakdown cover with Linea Directa, I wasnt aware it covered all Europe.
Couldnt find anything on it in freebeer and I'm a long way from Spain at present.
Wonder if you know what are the basic essentials of the breakdown cover as per the law.
They did advise me that they no longer issue green cards annually and I only need the ins.receiptfor whatever country I happen to be in.
Also is there normally one central international or EU tel. number for breakdown emergency,....I believe the only one I have from L.Dir.begins 906 or something similar but I have never used it and presumed it was only for inside Spain.

I'll have to check my policy, but certainly Mapfre was European as I checked it covered me in the UK. Must admit when I changed to another company I just assumed it was the same

Linea Directa always sent me a green card for EU cover with every renewal, just had to keep it safe with documents, and of course with the bit that says you have paid the premium.

You can get breakdown cover for in-province only up to all of Europe, depends what you want to pay for and where you drive!

Wonder if you've received one this year, as they told me in Feb.that they no longer issue them and just to use my old one together with a bank receipt?

They also dont normally issue a receipted ins.certificate but I wasnt too happy about that not having a new green card either.
I pestered them with a few phone calls and they eventually sent a cert, but no new geen card.
Maybe you know what is covered by the incl.breakdown ins.and is it valid outside of Spain?
I am way up in Sweden at pres.and dont have all the paperwork with me.

OK I've checked this out with LD.

Firstly (according to LD) it is not obligatory to have any breakdown cover although it is usually offered as an optional addon to the policy and included in the premium. Towing to a garage after an accident is always included.

The reason it is optional is that on most new cars these days they have a free breakdown cover for up to five years and it makes sense to use that rather than pay extra.

The cost of the basic breakdown cover depends on the car but typically would be €45/yr. It will always be included unless you specifically exclude it.

With LD the basic travel cover is actually pretty good. It covers the whole of Europe and any countries listed on the green card. It covers Technical assistence on the road, towing from KM0, forwarding of parts, Recovery to your home if within Spain or countries bordering Spain, advancement of bail, hotel stays and a lot more.

For an extra €35 you can extend the cover higher limits for medical cover etc. even covers getting any pets in the car back to your home.

I reckon 12 months cover, anywhere in Europe for €45 is a really good deal.

Thanks for that Fred.
So in the event of a breakdown do you have to make your own arrangements and claim later or is there a central number to call from anywhere in the EU for Lin.Dir.to put wheels in motion or maybe a combination of the two?
