ADSL or Wireless thingy from nearby town?
As the thread suggests, what's the best way of getting internet at our new Spanish home? ADSL or the wireless thingy from a nearby town?
I'm not sure of the relative costs as yet so that might be a factor, but has anyone compared the two?

If you already have a (connected and active) telephone, then adding ADSL is simple. The speed you get is dependant on how far you are from the nearest exchange.
If that's not an option, then WiMax may be possible - depends if you have line-of-sight to a mast.
Then there's satellite or even mobile dongle, but these really are last resorts.

I guess it varies but the "municipal" version will probably be much cheaper and much slower. In the town near me it is €8 a month for up to 1 Mb. That's fine for most people who just want it to do emails and update their Facebook accounts. I pay €30 for 6 Mb ADSL, plus the phone line, because I do a lot of downloading.

As said several times before - I have to use Wimax because there is no telephone line in the street, have very few problems, in fact considering the amount of rain and that we have the clouds rolling down the streets the signal seems quite good to the mast in the next village - better than the TV which on a number of stations is pixelating despite our being near to the transmitting mast. But that could be because we are so near.
we use Jetsur, but not sure if they cover your area.

It has 2 speeds slow and stop, the name of the company operating it seems to change as often as the weather and once in a while it goes off altogether for a couple of days or so.
Reading between the lines possibly because they haven't paid their bills.
On the positive side, I only pay for the months when I'm in Spain and have it deactivated in between.
I keep thinking about a sat. system, but would have to pay subs every month regardless wether I'm here or not.

I have an AirMax connection, which means I have a "fruit bowl" sized dish pointed at a neighbour's house. This connection gives me both phone and internet at a low, but usable speed which is sufficient for me to annoy people on expat forums but it wouldn't be much use if child #1 was trying to destroy some mystical world while child #2 was downloading every TV programmes ever made (or worse!) and granny was Skyp-ing her 9 closest friends - all at the same time.

If you have a telephone and the local exchange is not overloaded then it is simple.
Movistar told us it was impossible to install ADSL at our house, we may have to wait months, maybe years.
The Wimax option mentioned here seems viable if Plan A falls through.

Hi
I agree with what´s been said but a dongle can be a good solution; you can do Wi-Fi from a dongle, and I have speed tested at 6Mb (albeit in Seville).
ADSL is best, Wimax a viable alternative where available, a dongle or connection through your mobile smartphone next.
