Default adsl connection to wireless router

hi all can anyone help me connect to Telefonica ADSL wireless router?

I just called Telefonica & checked my password was still the one they issued at the start of the contract, however my laptop finds all available networks (5 in total would you believe) & when I try to connect to mine I can´t.

So, to a complete non technical person who just wants to listen to Radio 4 in bed can anyone please expalin:

Is the password (contrasena) the same as the network key that my laptop keeps asking me for.

I enter the password & get a message saying it wants 40 bits or 104 bits depending oin my network configuration. What on earth does this mean???

Any help appreciated, cheers all.

First of all... is the wireless option activated on the router? just because it has an arial doesn't mean you just get wireless.

Telefonica routers generally need to be activated, this can be done by either connecting to the router from your web browser (need to be connected to the router by ethernet to do this, address normally http://10.0.1.1 and password is normally 1234, don't mess with this if you like to fiddle with things ) or by pressing the reset button in a specified sequance (see manual that came with router).

Telefonica routers generally use network names like: WLAN_4 but you can reset this by connecting to your routers control panel (or you can leave it as is).

The router name and password are generally on the bottom of the router, as long as they haven't been changed you should be fine using them, if the network name is not there then as I mentioned it will probably be WLAN_4 or similar.

If you know the router is activated for wireless use then enter the password on the underside of the router when prompted (exactly as written, case sensitive).

The password type (40 bits, 104 bits or WPA) depends on the type mentioned on the underside of the router, if using a Mac you might not get the option depending on your operating system although if you don't get an option the computer should work it out for you.

Oh yes, sometimes when you activate the wireless option on the router it will be an open network, this means anyone can jump onto the network and use it without a password, it is generally advised to activate the password option if this is the case, again, this is normally done by connecting to the router through your browser... although I think the routers of late might have the password option auto activated so you might be as well ignoring this last comment.

Good luck

hi thanks for the prompt & complete response, much appreciated.

It is a wireless router because it says so on it, nothing underneath the box to add much though.

I suspect the person setting it up has changed the password so I am trying to make contact. Failing that, anyone got any recommendations for someone near Denia to come over & get the laptop set up.

Cheers

Are you sure your network is showing? Do you know the name of yours?

If so, it is asking for a WEP key, which should be on the bottom of the router, it will be a series of random letters/numbers.

Alternatively, you should be able to hard reset the modem to default settings, then access it using the post from Econ
