Accomodation Spain
I am flying into Barcelona in February 2003 and will be travelling north and south of the area, can anyone recommend any places of interest that I should not miss! along with any clean, comfortable, cheap 'pensions' or simular overnight stops and what I would expect to pay for a double room. Many Thanks.

Depends on your interests. City or rural or natural? History,
prehistory, art, cuisine, museums? How much time? Traveling by bus,
train or car?

The classification called "pensión" (a room plus meals) doesn't really
exist widely in Spain anymore. The lower-end hotels are "hostales".
Are you looking for a "casa rural", something like a b&b?

A clean, unpretentious room in a small, family-run hostal in most
Spanish towns can be had for under $30. However, albergues (youth
hostels) are a steal. Last time I was in Spain (four years ago), it
was about $14, breakfast included. Many hostels have private rooms as
well, though in February not all will be open.
Even though I'm not a big fan of his, I enjoyed the Museu Dalà in
Figueres. Olot is a fine place for country walking, the only area of
mainland Spain with volcanic craters. Besalú & Castellfollit de la
Roca are neat little medieval towns. Cadaqués on the coast, Puig Cerdá
in the Pyrenees, Barcelona if you like the bustle of the city. All
reachable by bus, some of course, by train also.

There are plenty of pensiones in Spain. They just aren't listed in all the
travel books. A pension is one (sometimes more) step lower than a
hostal....and one step up from a casa huesped. They are a great way to save
money on accommodations....just ask to see the room before committing.
