Default Abbeygate Insurance

Hi,

Does anyone have any experiences with them? I've used them before for a UK plated car, however never claimed.

I am in the process of organising another quote, however it all seems very unprofessional, no formal documentation, tell you everything is OK, offer low prices and seem keen to get the payment made.

This is all well as far as I'm concerned as long as they're decent insurers when it comes to actually using the insurance.

Thanks for all your input

Abbeygate are HUGE-BROKERS, not insurers. However they are in several EU countries and are doing very well for themselfs here in Cyprus. All quotes must be in writing if not back off.

I use Abbeygate for two of our cars. I found the prices to be competitive and they come down every year unlike Linea Direct which always went up. I have never made an insurance claim in 35 years of driving, so can't comment on that side of things.

They always send me all the formal documentation by E mail and I print them out.

They have offices down the road from us in Moraira , have been there for ages, never used them but as has been said they are a broker and not an insurer, most policies designed for expats seam to be with liberty Seguros which is part of a huge American insurance company

Have used them in the past but now use another broker as was not happy with the service. Go to the office as online services are so impersonal.

Their quoted motor premiums tend to be cheap ... for a reason. Be aware that their motor policies are underwritten by a Gibraltar based company which comes with a major disadvantage .... it cannot enter into knock-for-knock agreements with Spanish insurers. Therefore it can take far longer than normal (several months) for them to settle seemingly simple claims, or even to get your car back from repairers, because there are no automatic agreements in place. Their cheap premium suddenly becomes very expensive when un-insured costs of alternative transport are added in. You get what you pay for.

... by the same argument then, this must apply to IBEX as well?

I use them for my car in Spain, but I only have basic third party + breakdown cover. I've never had to claim so far, but the premium has come down 10 euros this year.

Edit: I should add, Abbeygate are just the broker... the Insurer is Tradewise, based in Gibraltar.

I insure with IBEX and have never had to wait for a payout, the last one the other party ( guilty ) was insured with LineaDirect.

Also I note that you have a vested interest in insurance, Fred James has removed your business link from your 2 previous posts.

I do have an interest in insurance but deleting my business link from my 2 previous posts (unrelated to this post) is harsh. I didn't realise that I was breaking a forum rule by offering assistance to the poster.

I made absolutely no reference to my insurance business in this particular thread, I was simply offering advice based on fact and my own experience. I thought that was the point of this forum.

Anyway, I was not referring to Ibex in my original post but, in reply to snikpoh, Ibex are not a member of the Convenio CIDE/ASCIDE (similar concept to knock-for-knock agreements in the UK) either.

This is the list of insurer members of Convenio CIDE/ASCIDE as at May 2014:

My original post acknowledged Abbeygate often offer low premiums. Surely it is only fair to also raise the potential costly issues in the event of a claim that would be avoided by choosing to purchase cover from an insurer listed above.
