Default 4 x 4's Spain

I have posted this on another forum also, so apologies to those of you that are registered on it:

OK this is for peace of mind more than anything else ... I've been looking for months for a LHD 4 x 4 in decent nick with low mileage with no luck and suddenly there are more around than you can shake a stick at.

I've found loads in Germany, but also a SWB Hyundai Galloper in the UK. Its a 2.5 lit turbo diesel and its on UK plates.

Is there ANY problem in getting 4 x 4 vehicles registered in Spain, and does anyone know if a 2.5 lit engine is going to see me penalised tax wise over there?

It may have already been covered elsewhere but I can't find it. Zelnic?

I also found a German site with loads and loads of LHD cars all from dealers, most apparantly in excellent condition with low mileages.

Hi Mitzyboy

We bought in a 4x4 lhd on British plates last year, it is a Nine year old Discovery. The tax goes on engine size ours is also 2500cc, above 1600 is 12% and below is 7%. our tax for the car was about 550 euros approx, then ITV etc on top. Goes on age as well as engine size.

OK ... this is 4 yrs old. Doesn't the tax reduce if you've owned it for 6 months before you import it (to Spain). Isn't it just an admin charge then? Or do you substitute "admin" for "tax".

If you can do it within three months of arriving and have proof you lived in UK before then, I think you do not pay the import tax, but you need a letter from the embassy or consulate. We left it a bit longer.

i think you CANT import it unless you´ve had it 6 months? but that takes the mic cos the garage in alhaurin is importing transporters full of 4*4s and stuff and importing them every month.

Can you post some links please to these 4x4 LHD sites (or PM me them)? I'm looking for a high-end Mitsubishi "Montero", less than 12 months old. Thanks.

Where did you get this info from pwwm? Just interested in finding out what to expect if you go over the 3 months and whether they will accept any other proof etc. i.e. details.

Hi Unexpat

It was our gestor that told us that and was trying to give us a form to take to consulate to be signed by them, but we had been here to long.

Hi, I'm new to the board, please forgive me if I am posting incorrectly. That said, I spend my time alternating between Florida and Spain and I have a 4X4 in both locations.

My thoughts on this are that one would do better to buy the vehicle in Spain and avoid all the hoopla in getting your car registered in Spain. I bought a Jeep YJ privately from a German chap in Ondara ( I live in Javea), admittedly a 1988 model but with a transplanted engine from a later model, bodywork in real good shape, good paint, good rubber, 60K miles approx....6K euros. There is a chap in Altea who deals almost exclusively in Jeeps with some other maker SUV's. I think if you look around, you will find what you are looking for in Spain. I see you locate yourself in Oliva and I can say I have seen oodles of 4X4's from there to Alicante for sale.

Good luck on your search,

Firtreesix
