A Spanish friend had a BMW, and I told him we call them "Black Man's Wheels" (that's me branded a racist again!) he must have misheard me, he keeps saying "Black Man's Willy" and falls about laughing, I haven't the heart to correct him!

Without doubt the UK factories have built a good reputation over recent years, and although they are nearly all foreign owned, they are turning out ever increasing numbers of cars. Mini, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Lotus, Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Jaguar/Landrover, MG, Vauxhall, they all seem happy with a UK workforce. We produce more cars than Germany, but I've read here we don't make anything any more! All the Ford diesel units in Europe are produced at Dagenham, Bridgend exports Ford engines to Spain, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Belgium and the USA. Even the majority of the F1 racing teams opt for a British base.
Likewise most of the important improvements to production cars incl those from Germany were developed from UK F1 research and technology.
Until a UK team took charge of Ferrari, they couldn't have won a race with a three legged donkey, in fact it was rarely that they even managed to complete the course.
Schuie had a lot to be thankful for in that respect during his years at the top.
As good as he was, without easily the best car on the F1 circuit at the time I think his successes would have been much more limited.

No the Swedish ones were never a problem in that respect, there again they never got chance.
The only permanent ball and chain I ever found myself attached to, was from my neck of the woods.
Estonia is my latest hunting ground and I must say I'm quite impressed..........up to now anyway.

Both Czech and Slovac, bloody gorgeous, knock those peroxide Swedes into a cocked hat.
Had a nice one staying here a couple of months back.
Shame she was out of my age range by a couple of generations or so.

Sure, we don't make as much as we used to, but for a little old island we ain't doing bad, probably topped by Spain though! The tsunami of foreign companies wanting to buy a bit of UK are only too aware of that.
The aerospace industry of the United Kingdom is the second- or third-largest national aerospace industry in the world, depending upon the method of measurement.[1][2] The industry employs around 113,000 people directly and around 276,000 indirectly and has an annual turnover of around £20 billion.
Business secretary Vince Cable explains why he is focusing on the British aerospace industry, the world’s second largest, and how he can help develop new aircraft programmes.
The UK is the world’s second biggest defence exporter behind the US
Employs 300,000 overall in the UK
9,000 defence companies including small businesses exist in the UK
New Qashqai means Sunderland Nissan plant now makes more cars than the whole of Italy

One think that would be missed is the spices, such a variety and cheap.
I go for the cheap ones, as every 6 months or so OH throws out the opened spices.
He says that they lose flavour, and then we start again afresh.

It seems a very difficult market for bookshops in the UK - apart from competing with Amazon* they have to deal with the cheap threat from charity stores. However it seems that this bookshop owner, on his last legs, found a way to get extra customers via Facebook:

I think if any business of mine got to the state where I needed to go begging for help or charity like that, I would realize it was long past time to call it a day.

they sell either privately by word of mouth or via specialist bookshops who know and appreciate the bringing together of the buyer and seller (OK for a price perhaps - but that is what business is all about). They will also contact their network of friends to look out for a book for you.
If bookshops are dead - why did Waterstone make so many efforts to get his business back after he realised how stupid he was to have sold it.!!

Strangely enough in contrast to most expats I miss Spanish TV when back in the UK.
Ok I can see some online, but it doesn't have the same impact on me, as when I'm in Spain.
Granted there is a lot of rubbish, but there are quite a few gems as well, the best usually being on late in the evening...and no I'm not talking about the endless stream of porno either.
Very sad to have lost the three local Valencian channels though, let's just hope some of the others don't also go tits up before things start to look up again.

This year, our top selling programme brands were all BBC commissions: Top Gear, Doctor Who, Frozen Planet, Torchwood, Spooks, Sherlock, Planet Earth and Natural World, each of which sold in over 100 markets.
