Hi folks.
I have just been told that 088 is an emergency english speaking phone in Spain. (same as 112) Has anyone any info?. Is it a scam for a premium type number perhaps??.

It is old news I think, about a year ago and the number was meant to be free connection to english speaker for reporting 'transport incidents' only. Including drugs/stolen goods and vehicle robbery.

Instead of commenting on how great my advice is, why don't you give your mind blowing insights on to how to find out about the number, that will end up with the same result as my advice. I.e. if you ring it, you will find out. You should know the answer anyway, you're soooo clever.
So please let tuk tuk know before they waste 10 cents on a call.

it is not a wise thing for you to suggest an emergency number be tied up by folks asking for the local chippy........

Only someone who has an IQ of double digits would think of it.

It's given as a useful emergency number.

You crack me up..

I'm glad someone googled it though and found out. I did do that originally but thought my own answer too amusing an oportunity to pass up on.

•For emergency assistance from police, ambulance or fire services call 088 in the Basque country and 006 in the rest of the country.
However a lot of people seem to think it is a hoax. If anybody DARE try it.. Then please let me know what happened. Or the next time somebody injures themselves or needs the rozzers then PLEASE ring 088 first and find out for us all, this will not upset JLS either, you are only allowed to dial it if you are in dire need of an emergency service or he will tell you off, however if it is a hoax number it will gobble all your credit and then you'll have to dial 112. So is it best to try it now and say you thought it was the chippy or best to call it during a real emergency and get stung. We really are no further along are we.

Something else I noticed just so you know... General emergencies (multi lingual operators available)
Phone: 112

Only once having to contact the police for a safety condition rather than an emergency, I phoned 112 and asked to speak to an English speaking operator.
The situation was too complicated for my Spanish.
I was asked if the situation was critical, on replying that it wasn't I was told an English speaker would attend to me shortly. The wait was only a minute or so.
However I got the impression that had I said it was critical then an operator would have been diverted to me immediately.
