Safety concerns Cape town student
Hey guys,
I'm playing with the idea of getting my undergrad degree in a prestigious university in South Africa (I'm thinking about UCT), however I'm really concerned about the safety in a place like Cape town. Coming from a European small town I'm used to a pretty outgoing livestyle (walking back home at 3am in the morning). The worst thing which happens in my town is some teens smoking pot, so I guess I'm not really considered to be street smart. Also I've read that SA is getting even worse. So guys what do you think is it really safe for someone like me?

Sorry for the delayed response, but as you rightly suggest, Africa is a diminishingly attractive proposition for Brits these days. There are so many threads and responses which answer your original question I'm not going to repeat them here, so have a dig around and I'm sure you'll see what the trend is.
We've been gone for 9 months, and every day since we left I've given myself a pat on the back. Great place to visit, and we'll go again for a holiday. But live there? No chance. And it's not just the crime.
Any country that elects someone like Zuma as its head of state should be avoided.

I did, I just thought it may be different for students. Whatever there are plenty of student friendly countries I guess.

Student Advice,
I have never lived in South Africa, only visited a couple of times. My brother has lived there since 1997. In the past month he has had his house broken into and things stolen and also been held up at gunpoint after leaving a bank.
I'm not sure how old you are, but my daughter is of college age. I would pitch a fit if she thought of going to South Africa to study. It's a beautiful country and there are some very nice people there. However the risk of violence is too great. There are plenty of other student friendly countries.

If I was your mother, I would swipe your passport and hide it until I drummed in the voices of reason into your head. Education there no longer as good as it used to be unless you go private and pay big $$. Even then, you need a life without constantly looking over your shoulder.
