Default Wealth Adviser Job

Hello - new to this bit of BE, hope someone can help.... I've been planning immigration to Canada for some time now but out of the blue I've been put forward for a job as a wealth adviser in Singapore (have visited before, sister lives there so thats not the issue) Really I'm wondering if anyone has experience of this industry... Without naming company names, I was approached by a UK recruitment firm who were recruiting commission based wealth advisers for various off-shore investment firms specialising in the ex-pat market. The company themselves seem legit, I've done a good bit of research on both the recruitment firm and the employer but obviously its a big(bigger...) move to work on a commission basis so I wondered if anyone had any experience of financial services in Singapore, what the market's like, companies to avoid, the working culture etc etc

Any advice/experiences gratefully recieved!

Singapore is the number 3 financial center in the world. So there are a lot of banks and bankers. Citigroup etc are all headquartered there.

Commission basis? That is your own perrogative and call.

I work in wealth management in the region (based in Thailand and working in Indonesia a lot), as far as I know about Singapore they would need to pay you some form of a basic salary in order to get you a work permit. Otherwise, as far as I know, you will be working illegally and I wouldn't try that in a highly regulated market like Singapore if I were you.

Most companies won't sponsor you for a work permit in our industry right off the bat in South East Asia, since so many nut cases come out here and lose it completely. As far as working on a commission basis, you just have to think of it as starting your own business. I make more than I have ever made on salary, but yes, there can be extremely stressful slow periods where it seems like it nothing is working right, but then all of a sudden everything comes together. You will have to learn to budget and save differently than one does hen they have a steady salary.

I would never choose to work in a different region or in a different profession. I love what I do, have absolute freedom over my time and life, and in this industry once you have started to build a client you eventually build up to the point where you have a passive income from referrals and top-ups on investments. The first year or so unfortunately you will need to cold call and it sucks, but once you can afford it then most people hire someone to do it for them, as there is no lack of unskilled people wanting work out here.

Feel free to pm me if you want me to review what kind of offer they are giving you. To be honest you could probably get a job with any wealth management company out here as long as you have some sales experience and look presentable, since it costs next to nothing to bring you on board. Just be careful that most outfits don't care about the client and aren't very ethical, if that bothers you then you need to make sure you "interview" them as well to make sure they are in line with your own morals and ethics.
