Are the roomers about Singapore true ?
Hello,
I am 27, I have studied Renewables in Germany and now I am working in that sphere in Eastern Europe, not a British citizen though.
Recently I have started considering the possibility to try to relocate in Dubai or Asia, so Singapore seems like an interesting idea, especially after reading about your experience. While doing my research in forums like that I have also encountered some disturbing info and I wanted to check it here with you, guys. It's about the extremely restrictive laws on any sphere of life and some examples are:
-You are not allowed to drive car alone after 18:00
-The police is tracking your car with a GPS
-If your dog is barking at night it's vocal cords have to be removed
-Cannot smoke anywhere, very high fines
- If there is too much water in the flower pots - high fine, as water attracts mosquitoes.
-Cannot talk about politics in public
-If you already have 2 kids, you are being reminded to use protection, so you don't make them 3.
-Death sentences on pretty much all kind of crimes.
How much of that is true and to what extend it is being applied for real, how are foreigners being treated there and is there something that a normal decent guy should be really worried about ? It's not that I am planning to get in trouble there or smth like that, but doesn't it sound like George Orwell's "1984" ?
What is your advice on a young guy with a dream of international business and traveling like me ?
Thanks in advance

Yeah it's all true.
Especially for people with internet nicknames beginning with 'M'.

Sounds ridiculous also to me, so I wanted to be sure that it's all crap and get some serious opinions about young people's life and if it's a good idea to start a career there in general...

It's a great place to experience, I would say. I don't know how easy it is to find employment though. Locals will always be favoured first.
Singapore has the reputation of being strict, in that it does actually apply the rules it sets. Smoking, like in many countries now, is restricted. Nothing unusual there. How many folks smoke these days anyway? Not many here.
The water in pots you mentioned..... You're talking about stagnant water there and it is dangerous due to the Aedes mosquito which causes dengue fever which can be fatal. So, yes, best to check your water in flowerpots and the like. Just sensible really.

Madara - the only truth in the points you raised is with regard to the flower pots believe it or not!! The Environmental Department in Sing does carry out inspections to make sure there is no stagnant water being allowed to gather - flower pots being one of the most common areas.
Although I came over with my family I'd say Singapore is a great place for a young, single guy too. It's a very sociable place.

The bit about discussing politics in public is possibly true too - there's a law which states that a public gathering of more than 5 persons without a police permit is illegal in Singapore.... kid you not!

That's as maybe but quite an interesting topic, don't you think? If you have some inside information, do hit the mod button just to the right of the karma button. That will alert the moderators.
I was down in Singapore last week. Nice to pop back but, geez, folks seem so uptight and stressed down there . And the rules and regs do get to you. Was about to jump in a taxi outside the Paragon when some stuck up little &@& starts waving his arms and blowing his whistle and clearly I was not "in the correct zone" to jump in a taxi. I could've told him where to stick his whistle but thought better not.

Must have been a bad day. You generally don't see people being uptight or stressed over here. In fact everything here goes smoothly, no hurry at all, etc. - if you were to film the masses walking it would almost look like a slow-motion replay.

No was like it the whole trip. It's all comparative though. I'm just used to Penang these days which is somewhat sleepy in comparison......but.....if you asked me the question Would I rather run a business in Singapore or Malaysia, I'd probably pick Singapore.
