How neccessary is a car in Singapore?
Family of four.
Looking at leasing SGD2k per month
or is public transport/taxis good enough that hiring a car once or twice a month is a btter option whenever you need it
do condos come with parking spaces or is that even more on top?

Condos do come with parking places usually. We had a parking place when we lived there but didn't have a car.
I suppose it depends on what your requirements are but we didn't find it a problem doing without a car in the time we were there (almost 3 years). We didn't do so much commuting though. The times that we did commute into town, which were for a week at a time, we'd have a regular taxi driver/limo who would turn up each day at the correct time. Easy enough to find a taxi driver who will do that.

Buy a brand new car.
Yesterday in the Certificate of Entitlement auction the cost of the entitlement to buy a car below 1600cc was approx S$90,000.
The car costs extra.

Hi Robbo,
The trains in Singapore called the MRT takes me to most places I need to get to. And they are looking at building more lines !
Perhaps you could google MRT network and have a look at the areas you need to reach.
A car is however useful for a family of 4, particularly for groceries, etc.
I am not sure if they do home deliveries in Sing. Like waitrose and sainsbury,or having 4 persons in a cab might be options.
C.O.E is expensive, and there are tolls as well eg. The ERP.

Car is costly in Singapore. COE (Certificate of Entitlement ) just a paper for you to own car for 10years is already 90K SGD. Carpark charges, ERP gantry that you pay to cross certain road. With the great network of MRT and buses. As long as you live near the MRT station. You do not need a car.

We (self plus wife) lived in Singapore for 7 years and never needed or missed not owning a car. Taxis are plentiful, reliable and. Much cheaper than owning and running a car. No problems with parking either. If you haven't yet committed to a condo it is worth spending half of the money you had allocated for car rental on a decent condo in an area within easy walking distance of a supermarket. Pay a small premium on a condo and walk to the shops. We lived on Marine a Parade Road next to Parkway Parade and we could push our shopping trolley all the way back to our condo in 5 minutes.

Getting around in singapore via public transport is easy. For the money that you want to spend on a Car, i rather you take the taxi. Try to stay at places near amenities suggested by rusty747. It will help alot in the long run.

Public transport and taxis, I wouldn't bother with a car and we are a family of four as well. The MRT system is great and once you figure out which web sites and iphone apps to use to check for buses you will love the system here.

Agree, Singapore transport system is pretty reliable and convenient
Guess going without a car is the way to go.. parking is expensive and not forgetting the peak hour surcharge (ERP) etc.

Family of 3 have lived in Singapore for 15 years without a car! Deliveries are easy, tolls and COE crazy expensive, MRT/buses a breeze, taxis plentiful (except when it rains, which is one of the great puzzlements of life, given the frequency of precip here...). Living near major lines / stations is the key, and lots of choices. Singapore is not that big.
