We live in BC and it's pretty much a melting pot of different races and cultures. This is great as it adds real diversity and flavour. What is it like in other provinces like NS? All those people that live in NS, and other provinces, share your observations with me. It would be greatly appreciated.

When I was in Alberta its about the same as in BC, the larger citys have good diversity the smaller citys and towns not so much.

I am in Chilliwack and we are more or less not diverse at all.

So do I take it Chilliwack is not that diverse? Is it mainly caucasian?

2006 census data has approx 4% of the population as Visible Minority and 4% as native indian.

According to the 2006 census, Nova Scotia has 4.2% visible minorities, and I assume, those would be mainly living in Halifax. In some areas outside the city, you would be hard pressed to see a non-caucasian person. Oh yes, I know one, my family doctor...

I lived in the Annapolis Valley in NS and the only real diversity came from the Asian students at the university. It's one reason why we decided to leave the Valley and move to Ottawa.

Ottawa is nothing like Toronto or Vancouver but there's still a good mix of ethnic groups.

Calgary is pretty ethnically diverse. Just taking my building as an example, UK, French (the real french), Kurd, Iranian, Thai, Viet, Indian (from India), Indian (from East Africa), Eritrean, Chinese, Japanese...................... oh I almost forgot we even some Cradle Canadians

Just come back from 2 weeks in Seeley's Bay near Kingston, ON with our friends - Nigerian dad, white mum and two mixed race kids - the 15 year old kept saying "where are all the black people" ! Hadn't realised he would feel so self-concious of that! But had no problems at all...

Thanks for the info guys. We are considering moving from BC but we are a mixed race family and so it's quite important that my kids see a little bit of diversity and don't feel the odd ones out wherever we go. I'm sure they wouldn't but that would be a worry for me.

One good thing I find about Calgary is the range of mixed race relationships.

Winnipeg's got a good ethnic mix. The majority of the "whites" are European mostly mid European, Ukrainians, Poles, Russians. Thens theres us Brits and a few French. Lots of German speaking Hutterites and Mennonites.

Then there are all the visible minorities, from all corners of the world and the aboriginals.

Whitehorse, YT is very diverse. Lots of First Nations, chinese, filipino, german, quebecois, french, people from many different provinces in Canada...it's unusually open for a city so isolated and small I find.

More than half the population of Toronto was born outside Canada. They're from all over. Most of my children's friends had parents of different nationalies.

i live in rural ontario and know someone who is not white skinned. They say they get a lot of stares and that at work people think he is the cleaner.

My experience of rural Ontario is that Caucasians predominate....and in private conversations at BBQ's etc it's not hard to understand why....nough said.....and I don't see that changing any time soon.
