British No Claims to Autopac Manitoba
#1
Hi
Just wondered what the situation is with converting British no claims to Autopac.
What is the maximum you can get in Manitoba?
How do you proof no claims?
Is it just one letter with your last insurer?
Or do you need letters from each of your insurers to say that you held insurance with them for a full year and had no claims against the policy?
Cheers

Not going to Manitoba but thought I would let you know what we had to do in Alberta.
Didnt go with the first company we did shop around before we committed then just provided a letter from "more than" in the UK to prove how many years we had been claim free.

Hi
Cheers for info so they had no problems with the letter. Did you just ring More Than (I am also with them) provide you with a certificate?
Regarding the auto insurance Manitoba'a Autopac is owned by the provincial government and you only get insured by them, no one else so shopping around goes out the window

Yeah I just rang them explained the situation and then they posted it out to me in UK and then I scanned and emailed it to Phil in Canada. I then posted the original over to him just in case.
He had to put me on the insurance a few weeks ago and I just did exactly the same with Direct Line too.
Even had "Good Luck" from both of the telephone operators too

There is no choice of insurance in Manitoba, its the goverment scheme only.
Its a "No Fault" province, so though premiums are cheaper (so they say) so is any pay out, there are no million dollar claims in Manitoba.
This is from memory, so may not be 100% correct; There is no "No Claims" discount, you earn "merits" 1 merit every 2 years of clean driving (no accidents, fines etc) to a maximum of 5 merits, this will give you a discount of 25%. I don't know if they will credit you with any merits if you have a 'clean" record or not, most proberbly not.

Hi
We have had mixed answers from autopac brokers in the city. I converted my drivers licence from my clean UK one and got my Manitoba licence with one merit point based on clean UK licence. Maximum is 5 merit points (or so I am led to believe). You get a point for 2 years of clean driving. One agent told us that a UK letter means nothing and another told us that you can get full credit. We called Autopac direct and my husband was told that when you buy a vehicle you need to submit UK no claims letter. Your potential discount is up to the discretion of their underwriters and will only take effect on your poily renewal date which is 4 months less one day after your birthday. We have just purchased a Ford Windstar and my insurance with my one merit point was $200 more than the person who was selling it was paying and she had 5 merit points (FYI I am paying $107 p.a.)
Anyone else have any experience?
Thanks
Susan

Cheers for the advice
So would it be worth leaving my car insurance to run out into mid October even though we will be arriving the 12th of August so that I can take away six years no claims - so that will hopefully equate into 3 merit points?

Let's say that the average insurance is $1,250 per year, 1 merit is worth about 5% discount, so an extra merit is going to save you about $60 per year.
