Quite.

Lesser tongues probably couldn't give two hoots about the grammatical correctness of their sex toys, and I suggest that they're all the poorer for it.

Well put. Although the confluence of tongues and sex toys in the same post is a bit much at this time of night.

Unless of course, like me, you have no family... I have no desire to go back to the UK because I am not paying the cost just to visit the few friends I have - if they are desperate to see me, they can come over here for a holiday instead.
  2. Food is often made differently and quite often tastes differently in Canada when compared to the UK. Deal with it.
no different to when you visit france, italy or spain either... food still tastes different. TBh I don't mind it. I look on it as a learning experience.
  3. Canada has crime too. Suck it up.
    everywhere has crime
  4. BEWARE: Dreams are often different from reality.
too true - one reason why doing a reccie visit or at least giving yourself a way to get back home if you "hate" it is very important. only a total fool jumps in feet first without looking.
  5. The cost of car insurance differs from country to country. So what. Deal with it.
yup some things cost more, some things cost less - it probalby all evens out in the end.
  6. Banking in Canada is not as user friendly as the UK. So what. Get used to it.
I find that banking here seems to be years behind the UK, but I don't mind all that much. Being able to go to the bank when you loose your debit card (or do as I did and leave it in a shop) and have the not only cancel the old card but make you a temporary one on the spot has benefits. Far better than having to wait a week or more for the bank to mail a new card out to you.
  7. You CAN live without TV
Or you can get used to Canadian TV and watch a lot of DVD's...
  8. Be aware of the amenities available when moving to your utopian rural home. You're adults. What do you expect to have when moving into the middle of nowhere.
If you want lots of facilities, don't move to the middle of no-where - move to a big city... see that wasn't so difficult was it?
  9. Leaving your support network behind in the UK may be harder than you think. You're an adult, you should realise this.
I wholeheartidly agree with this. But with the internet, web-cams etc the world is a very small place now. You can chat to family and friends over the internet cheaply and easily, and when the worst comes to the worst, given a creditcard and some luck you could be back in the UK in less than 24 hours if push came to shove.
  10. Uprooting and moving to Canada, leaving friends, family, and support network for "the kids" is a risky move. Parents, be honest with your reason and research your move to Canada with your eyes open
Or do what we did and just jump in there and accept that if it all went pear-shaped you will go back... there is no shame in admitting that your "risk" didn't work... But for us (Mr Chookie, me and 4 kids) we are having a blast! Sometimes, taking that risk is worth it.
  11. North American chocolate mostly tastes of what i imagine baby sick would. If European chocolate is that important to you fatties, don't move.
I agree about the chocolate... that is why I have cultivated a group of friends who are more than happy to send me "food parcels" regularly
  12. Think before you type*
This should be the rule of the internet, not just those thinking of emigrating...
  13. Do lots of your own research and READ THE WIKI. Especially before asking stupid questions.
I was once told that there is no stupid question, just ones that you don't know the answer to. But that doesn't excuse you from doing research by yourself as well.
  14. The UK isn't as bad as you think
Meh - I am glad I left... but I do agree that it isn't all that bad, and I don't think that Canada (or anywhere else) is necessarily better... It is much the same tbh, just different.

16. There are no proper pubs. (don't bother looking)
17. The beer is mostly crap. (Still got alcohol in though)
18. Football and cricket are not valued. (don’t bother to explain or discuss with cradles, despite what they might say, they don't care).
19. Anywhere east of Abbotsford BC is bloody freezing in the winter. (It just is, buy a snow coat , hat and mittens).
20. Most cars are really crap, especially their pick-trucks. (Buy a Japanese or German car instead)
21. All their radio stations are shite. (if they are over 19 they are still listening to 1990s grunge).
22. Architecture is awful. (what did you expect in NA?)
23. They don't reward creativity in the workplace. (if you're lucky enough to get a job here, just keep your head down and occasionally invite your coworkers over for a bbq but make sure you supply the beer).

But the level of continuing cost is, I think, much greater than new emigrants generally allow. A family of four with one primary breadwinner will likely want to purchase at least five round trip tickets per year for fifteen years or better. (One parent going home for some domestic matter once a year, children going twice in order to maintain contact with grandparents and for the sake of their education). There's also potential for domestic stress since one parent can likely travel with the children once a year while the other is stuck at work. This, to my mind, is the compelling reason why North America is a better expat destination than Australia.

European chocolate is readily available in urban centres.

Bless you my child!

This thread is in danger of becoming a sticky....but then no one would read it
