I have to shamefully admit I don't even really know what tweets and twitters are except the birds I can hear out of my window right now.

I didn't even know who the footie player with the super injuction was until this morning when my FB friend had it on her wall, yet 65% of the population were supposed to know according to the Daily Fail, well until this morning I was one of the 35% who had no idea and who didn't really care anyway.............

So what is twittering and tweating then for the uniniated??

I thought it was some way of following say your favourite singer or actor or even sports star as they posted their daily doings, I never even knew it was for mere mortal folk until now!!

Twittering is like texting but online. This will give you something to start from, taken from the SOP I'm writing for work.....

TWittering Part One

Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as “tweets”. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters. These are displayed on the main profile page of the author via the http://twitter.com website and are distributed to the author's subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can choose how widely they wish to be followed, open to all readers, or restricted to a smaller group. A person who posts and reads on Twitter is known as a “Tweeter” or a “Twitterer”.

Our work Twitter account is used for disseminating information in a timely manner to the general public, and to external agencies, about potential and developing emergency or disaster situations, via Twitter website, so that they can make timely decisions as to the actions they should take during a disaster or developing situation.

Type your update into the "What are you doing" box and click the update button. Your tweet will post to your profile page and you should see it in your timeline. Tweets should be kept it short and to the point. The length of a tweet is based on the length of a standard SMS or text message. The first 20 characters are allocated to the name of the person posting the message. The remaining 140 are for the message itself.
Once a tweet has been posted it cannot be edited. You can delete an update by clicking the trash icon on the right end of the update, but you can't make changes.

You can search twitter by using the main search page at http://search.twitter.com/ or by using the Search window on the side of the SDCC profile page, enter the word for which you would like to search and Twitter will provide recent tweets containing that word.

Twittering Part two:

You can navigate directly to a user's profile if you know their username? Simply enter the URL http://twitter.com/username replacing 'username' with the username of the account you would like to visit.

http://twitter.com/invitations/find_on_twitter Find People link at top

You can also use Twitter's people search to find people who currently use Twitter. Search for a first, last, or user name as a starting point, and see what comes up. The easiest way to find people is to type into the search box on the right hand side of your home timeline.

You can also search for users who you may wish to “follow”. Following someone simply means receiving their Twitter updates. When you follow someone, every time they post a new message, it will appear on your Twitter home page. New messages are added to your home page as people post them, so you always get the updates in real time. When you log in, you can see what the latest updates are.

Twitter is designed to be fast-moving and timely, therefore needs to be monitored fairly frequently. It also draws input from a wide variety of sources ranging from members of the public to government organisations, and none of these sources are verified, thus making it a totally open source medium. For this reason there is an element of unreliability about it and reliance on information appearing solely on Twitter would be ill-advised.
Above the feed Twitter will tell you how many tweets have arrived for your feed since you last updated it. Click on the words “X New Tweets”and the feed will update.

RT is short for retweet, and indicates a re-posting of someone else's tweet. This is not an official Twitter command or feature, but people add RT somewhere in a tweet to indicate that part of their tweet includes something they're re-posting from another person's tweet, sometimes with a comment of their own.

Actually if its useful for anyone, please feel free to re-use it anywhere, its not copyright or anything

If you use Firefos there are add-ons you can get like Yoono, which run a twitter feed down the side of the main browser window.

The thing I would add Pollyana, is that the individual tweet tends to miss the point.

Where it becomes interesting is the collection; the stream. Not only the individual retweet of the posting which touches on memes, but 'trending' and the overall gestalt which paints a picture of what society is thinking in real time.

It's that which has held the out-of-touch and insular judges to ridicule, and that which has much of its value.

Thats a large part of it - ignoring the people who tweet abotu what they are having for breakfast etc, if you are looking at a developing situation you need to follow as many different feeds as possible so you get the whole picture.

We use it at work for disaster situations - things like the Christchurch and Japanese earthquakes have hit twitter amazingly fast, Bin Ladebn's death waa another with all kinds of info flooding in fast, not all accurate in that case. While we don't act on the basis of twitter info it goves a heads-up to developing situations.

Hashtags are one way of following a developing situation -
The # symbol is used is Twitter to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet.
Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They're like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag. Hashtags were developed as a means to create "groupings" on Twitter, without having to change the basic service.
Start using hashtags in your tweets, preceding key words. It can be helpful to do a little research first, to find out if the subject you're tweeting already has an established hashtag.
