Hi all,
We are planning a fact finding trip to Oz in May & are having a look round Perth, Adelaide & Melbourne......We were hoping to rent a Holiday Home/Villa at each location for a week at a time....We have found some places with swimming pools which we thought would be great for the kids & unwinding but would it be too cold(let me re-phrase that) would it not be warm enough at this time of year?
Any info from you ppl already in Perth, Adelaide & Melbourne would be much appreciated, Thanks. Chris & Sharon Effy.
This one's on me....
Cheers.

Used to take school hols to Brisbane in May and was usually consistantly around 24 degrees - but that is Brissie and a LOT warmer than Melb at that time of year... Adelaide has similar weather to Melb, so reckon you could expect the same. Perth - err dunno - anyone?

Thanks for that, that was one of our worries as well, we are going to the Gold Coast, May 15th and the kids love a swim.
As long as we can sink a few as well:

In April a couple of years ago the temp up at Ningaloo was a lovely 26C but in Perth was a bit chiller at 21C. (know the temps from diving)
I remember jumping in at Perth and it felt really cold, even in a thicker wetsuit. Thing is, a month earlier I had been in water of 8C - amazing how you easily get use to walmer waters

Sydney water normally gets consistently to 21 at the end of decemeber start of january. 21 I think is what most people would consider the min nice temp for swimming. The water is currently 23 and should stay above 20 until May.
I would say in May you would want to be in QLD. In winter Sydney waters go down to 16 which empties the waves of the wooses. The water starts warming in October but most people will find it a bit too fresh until Jan.
The harbour should be nice for my swim on Sunday.

We live in Adelaide and though it was really hot this weekend (32 Sat/30 Sun) and we were swimming in the sea, temps have gone back down to low 20's. It's forecast 22 today (1 Apr) and like this over coming weekend.
We are in the process of installing a swimming pool and from talking to lots of pool owners most reckon you can swim in your pool till May if it is has solar heating. We are having solar heating fitted so will still be relying on half decent weather. If it is gas heated then you can swim all year round (though very expensive to run).
We only arrived here last June so I can't really comment on the actual weather in May.
Good luck in your travels.

Out of interest Daffy.... do you know if you can have a pool fitted up to make use of both kinds of power?..solar AND gas?

In SE QLD the sea is swimable year round, in fact I find it better in the winter as in summer it's just gets too hot.
I believe DUP was refering to the air temp at Ningaloo was 45 NOT the sea temp.

Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne would find it too cold to go swimming in a pool unless it was heated, although it would'nt
be cold enough to catch hypothermia or anything it would probably be unpleasant.

Even staying in the shade on the boat I got sunburned from the glare off the water.

Perth will start cooling down in May, may start to get some rain as well. Though there could still be a few warm days.
If your swimming pool is heated then it may be warm enough to use, really depends on what the outside temp is like.
The ocean is cold; even in summer the ocean is cold. I always wear a shorty (wetsuit) when I go in. Brrrrrrr !
Though when my parents came over they thought it was lovely and warm!
