Angry UK National Insurance Contributions

I picked up on a comment which someone made on BE a couple of weeks ago. We have lived overseas outside the EEC since 1998 and have been paying class 3 voluntary contributions to safeguard our UK State Pensions.

I contacted the HMRC National Insurance Office yesterday to be told that we could pay class 2 provided we could prove that we are currently in full time employment at the date of any request to change. The difference is over £500 for both of us and would include incapacity benefit if we returned to the UK.

Costs per Annum
Class 3 £392.80
Class 2 £109.20
Difference £283 x 2 people = £567.20 x by 5 years £2836 over paid.

When I asked when this came about I was told April 2000. I asked why we had not been notified and was told that the Government decided that it would only place notices in the UK press and that individuals living overseas (the majority of people paying class 3) would not be notified.

This absolutely stinks, I am totally disgusted if anyone is doing the same as we are you may wish to look into which contribution you wish to pay.
