you will need a VPN or a proxy with a UK IP address to get the iPlayer to work. No problem for Dr Who, though - it's carried on the Space channel, not too far behind UK broadcasts.

Yes you can, you need to use something like expatshield to give you a UK ip address, you can also get itv player this way as well. Other option is to use torrents or subscribe to iplayer when it becomes available later in the year.

Download expat shield. You'll get a little shield like icon in your bottom right corner of your computer desktop with the other software. Right click it and turn it on. Then go to iplayer and you can watch any BBC programme. BBC site is very good and doesnt buffer at all as long as you've got a reasonably good speed broadband. ITV's does buffer though. But you can start, say Corrie, and pause it for about 10 mins and then watch with out it buffering.

torchwood... meh. not that interested in this new series to be honest - i like aliens and unless its a sontaran plan to turn us all into indestructible warriors, torchwood miracle day is not really my thing. also JB in HD... bad idea, you can see every wrinkle, every line!

not concerned about itv, dr who is the only thing i ever watch on terrestrial telly and ill get satelite in Vancouver, its 2nd on my list of must haves ( broadband for my autistic son to get on the web being number one) dont spend a lot of time on telly but i do like the Dr...

And for at least this weekend it's only a few hours behind. The one that just finished a couple of minutes ago is on this evening.

Mind you, when the series kicked off earlier this year they did the same but then missed a week or two making it late the rest of the time.

If you really can't wait just google "watch Doctor Who" and you'll find sites with good quality streams just hours after BBC broadcast.

So is the expat shield better (and if its free presumably cheaper!) than paying myprivatenetwork for a VPN?
I think I pay like $14 a month right now?
Thanks!

Have a look at Tunnel Bear. Neil Gaiman made mention of it last week when he recommended something on iPlayer (Doctor Who trailer I think). There is a free version (500MB) a month, so you can give it a try to see if it'll access what you want, and if you use up the 500 you can always pay for more (think it's $9.99 a month, but it seems to be $4.99 a month, and either price seems to be unlimited bandwidth.) Oh and if you tweet a link you can get 1GB extra for free a month.

I've just tried it with iPlayer, specifically last nights DH episode and it works very well indeed

You cannot legally access it no. Plenty of illegal ways of access it, but none legal. Check all the terms of use etc.

If it's on "space" channel, which you sub to then surely it's legal to watch it? I understand how using a computer program to lie to the Internet about where you are to access content is illegal. Torrents are illegal arnt they?
