TBH when I've visited Australia the term POM was always used as a nice term or jokingly, just to take the piss, however I don't find this racist.
It's a bit like calling people from Sunderland a mackem, which is what the car thieving, unwashed reprobates are known as, some are proud to wear the name badge under their charva hats and Elizabeth Duke Jewellery, some are offended, mainly the ones who don't like football/soccer.
However the problem will be is if I can't get a job or housing because I'm a POM, not if some shrimp barbequing Aussie calling me a pommie b*stard.
