I lived in Kitchener-waterloo for a long time. Don't worry, it isn't buggy. Well, compared to the Uk it is, but all of Canada is compared to the UK, as is Australia. But for Canada, it isn't buggy. People sit around outside easily during the summer with little worry of mosquitos and, unless things have changed drastically, there are no black flies.
As for SAD, yes, it can be rough but I can't see it being any worse than what you have in the UK.

[QUOTE=JaseAndHeth]We have friends moving to Oz later next year - wonder if I should show them this!??...

No, I don't think you should. If I may say so, your friends are going to Australia for their own reasons and will probably love it. I am sure they have done extensive research and have based their decisions are what they have found. I wouldn't want my experiences and opinions to put a sour note on your friends' plans--I only commented on this thread because there was a direct question about comparing Canada with Australia.

I had planned on making sure we had aircon though.
I like crisp snow scenes, but hate slush. I also get the seasonal disorder - ie. more depressed in winter with shorter days.
Do you have any suggestions on that? That could be a very big factor in our decision to move.
Thanks

What to do for SD? Waterloo Regional Airport offers very convenient charter flights to Mexico and other tropical places in the winter.... make use of it for your winter vacation.
Then you could also join a fitness club and stay active during the winter months.

first research, research and more research where ever you decide to settle. We moved to Canada, Moose Jaw in Sask, to be exact without ever having visited and we've been very lucky as we all settled straight away. We have lovely hot summers and even colder winters but we get through them, you have to learn to adapt to a new way of life as it's so different from the UK, in our opinion better than the UK. If you have family which will be wanting to visit then Canada is so much more easier and cheaper to get to than Austraila. Good Luck with your move and remember you can't do enough RESEARCH.
