Re: Have not been back to Uk for 10 years has it changed?

Fair enough, my apologies.

I very much understand what you're saying and you see it on this forum from both sides (UK to Aus, Aus to UK). I actually think we are saying similar things. The way you...

Re: Have not been back to Uk for 10 years has it changed?

Goodness, I don't think I suggested I didn't believe anyone and I don't think I'm lacking in empathy.

Re: Have not been back to Uk for 10 years has it changed?

I think to some extent people see what they want to see when they go back to the UK. It sometimes feels as if people need to reassure themselves that they made the right choice in moving to Australia...

Re: Stay in US or return to UK

Presumably it will always be possible to renounce a citizenship if one holds two or more?

I've never lived in the States so can only comment generally but it would seem foolhardy to me not to...

Re: UK too crowded... too expensive?

All I can say is that a Sainsburys around Chester vs one around Preston had different prices on the same day for petrol. As I said it could just be an error. We are off down south this weekend so...

Re: American again..exciting news and questions

I have had a bank account for a long time, I kept it while we were overseas. It would have been opened using my Irish passport and there were no problems then; I wouldn't expect there to be now but I...

Re: Moving back in three weeks ... home and belonging?

Hong Kong is safe (for expats) to a degree that many people can't comprehend. In that respect, it is a very good place to bring up kids; you can give them a lot of freedom that may not be possible in...

Re: Chester UK, cost of living? Saving etc..

Petrol obviously depends on how far you drive and what you drive. It's tough for anyone to give you an accurate figure on that.

TV is 12.12 a month I think although you are required to basically...

Re: UK too crowded... too expensive?

I don't know about groceries in two comparable stores in different locations, but petrol is not nationally priced in our very recent (at the weekend) experience. Whether this is a one off pricing...

Re: American again..exciting news and questions

An Irish passport shouldn't cause you any difficulty that a British one wouldn't, but you may well find it tough to get a rental without paying up front or at least showing that you have the funds to...

Re: Small function venues recommendations in Melbourne?

Collins Quarter is at the Paris end of Collins, up near Mamasita. It's a bar/series of bar type thing. Hard to explain! Has various areas including a cigar bar.

Re: Moving back in three weeks ... home and belonging?

No, I don't feel at home. I feel less unhappy now than I did in Jan/Feb (when I was very, very unhappy) but I don't feel comfortable, like I belong or like I am back 'home'. I am content (ish) to...

Re: Torquay

Aries, you were the poster I was thinking of. It sounds like you are very much building a life for yourself back in your home town and I'm glad you sound so happy.

The problem for anyone when...

Re: Small function venues recommendations in Melbourne?

What night of the week? Collins Quarter is nice but I believe they have a pretty hefty minimum spend for a Saturday night, not so much the other nights.

Re: Torquay

I'll try! To give some context, I did my last four years of school in Exeter, plus part of a gap year, uni holidays and about 10 months before I emigrated. I studied for a month in Paignton shortly...

Re: Torquay

I'd take Totnes over Torquay/Torbay but I'd pick Exeter over either of them.

Re: Suggestions/Advice on Locations to Live in the UK

Yes, crime stats are important and should form part of any returnee's research. Stats (of any sort) need to be interpreted carefully though and of course different types of crime are likely to be...

Re: Suggestions/Advice on Locations to Live in the UK

If you're considering Nottingham I wouldn't think the crime levels in Liverpool or Manchester would be any worse (I suspect they might be better).

Re: Cost of living and Super

I think it just goes to show that, as mentioned, if you're not sure you need to ask. All my roles have been quoted as salary only with super on top. My last role was in a not for profit in the...

Re: How Much Money Did You Bring Back

Hi Cheeky Monkey, 15k on start up costs - what does that include? Furniture? How much on a car? What else?

Re: kids coming back to uk, student fees

My brother had a gap year to avoid international fees and I seem to recall he had to spend most of it in the uk. It was over a decade ago so my memory is a little hazy and rules may have changed.

Re: How do you cope

The time will go quickly. Start sorting, getting rid and packing now. Honestly, trust me, start now. Also, make sure you take time to do things you enjoy and visit favourite places/people. It gets so...

Re: Moving to the UK this Summer

I lived in North Finchley too. It was fine, pretty nice, all you really need for day to day living. I love Muswell Hill and would definitely consider it if we moved to London (and I could afford it!)...

Re: Moving to the UK this Summer

A number of people on here went via ship with pets, if you do a bit of searching you should find a few threads about it. It seems that everyone felt it was a great option, from what I can remember. ...
