Both options work for me. I did not know about 156 until today, I had always used character map to look up the keyboard shortcuts for symbols.

156 works for me also, yet character map still says alt-0163

You have to use the number pad. If you don't have a number pad use fn+alt + 156

Interesting because 155 gives me ¢ and 0163 gives me £ . Maybe we just use different fonts.

Also UK keyboard has 1 extra key.

I still have a UK keyboard for my docking station at home and can easily switch between the two. You could also get a hybrid laptop and use the on-screen...

You could probably take a laptop to class. Taking a desktop, not so easy.

Or maybe put the shipping cost towards a decent laptop when you arrive in the US. Then you can easily take it back and forth.
