I will take the fifth amendment on that one.

But at that time in Auckland, it was easy for "other" people in our hostel to get work at the port, unloading cars from Japan.

Sorry, but your are wrong.

There is nothing to stop you looking for work and applying for a work permit, once you have entered the country on a vistors visa.

So there was no "luck" involved....

But the fact is there is nothing stopping you from coming here to look for work., as long as you meet the vistors requirements.
