I think it might depend where in Australia you are what you need to do to gain your licence - the Queensland Driving Licence is a straight swap over, I just went in one afternoon, filled out a form...

I would be inclined to phone DVLA and ask for their advice - give a change of address to someone you trust (family) and just say to DVLA that you are coming to Australia for "a while" and need...
