Re: the Scottish independence issue

Justin Raimondo is an idiot and he always has been. Easy to read, sounds plausible, but always way off base. An example in the piece you link. "The EU is hugely unpopular with ordinary British...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Yup there's another sure winner!
What a pity Scotland was recently robbed of its bid for independence. Scotland could have signed a trade agreement with Transdneistra .. Sod those imperialistic...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Rats should leave a sinking ship. Britain is finished; it no longer has an empire, and the Canadians no longer buy British cars. In fact, there is no longer a British car industry, so Scotland...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

"The Scottish public indicated their democratic choice ..." ?
But wasn't that mostly the over 55 age group, who really should have stayed home, and allowed the younger people to win?

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Everybody? When I visit Canada, it looks to me like most people are driving Hondas, Toyotas, Hyundais, Subarus, Kias, and VWs ... Similar mix of cars to what you see on the roads in the US and UK,...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

I'd be willing to bet if there was a larger turnout at the elections for the Scottish Parliament, they will no longer be in power. 50% voted in the most recent Scottish Parliamentary elections, 63%...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Turnout statistics are interesting, especially in light of the excellent high turnout for the recent referendum.

2011 Scottish Parliamentary Election - 50.4% turnout
2010 UK General Election...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Well, this was 1707. Times were different. This was way before a democratic franchise, which was gradually introduced in the UK between 1832 and 1920 something. But, for the time, those...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

OK, but there is a big difference. The Scottish parliament in 1707 was a genuine representative parliament of a free, independent country. (Certainly, the two countries had a vexed history after the...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Yes, I completely agree with this.

Except, perhaps, your point about people of Scottish origin living elsewhere in the UK being excluded. It seems to me that was right and proper, otherwise you...

He was basically disconnected. He never actually replied or responded, just shot off random effusions. I blame it on those little phone-type devices the young people seem to carry everywhere these...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Well, Quebec has been simple compared to the UK conundrum, since Quebec is one province in a Federation. In the UK they didn't create the federation yet. In hindsight, the British maybe should not...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Attributing "if you think this, then you are deluding yourself" to BE members who have posted comments on this thread. I don't see a lot of delusionals on this thread, mostly thoughtful people with...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

I wonder if the SNP will hold on to power in future elections? I read yesterday that the Scottish Assembly elections achieved a much lower turnout than the UK election in Scotland did, presumably...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Since the No side won by a very significant margin, there would be no sense in holding another referendum in the next several decades. Look at the Quebec experience ... The momentum just went away,...

I made it up on the spur of the moment, while typing up post #1986. One of my trademark really weak jokes, specially designed so any random reader would immediately detect that it was just a...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

I would say Westminster CAN do this, out of spite. However, now it's looking like they may not have to? It is inconvenient, being in one of those time zones with a half hour increment.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Didn't I read that, in the event of independence, Westminster will not permit Scotland to use either GMT or BST? They'll have to go half an hour in one direction or the other, like Newfoundland does?

To be fair, Scots are Brits. I assume even the Yes Campaign folks would agree to that geographic fact of life.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

The Scottish Government will be able to afford several of these. Not the full size, but the die cast should fit in Salmonds mini-me budget.

This raises a big question ... maybe already been mentioned earlier in the thread. If the vote is yes, would that then be a tremendous employment boost for both Scotland and the UK, as contractors...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Yes, and why was this allowed to happen so asymmetrically in 1999? (Was that when the devolved assemblies came about?) I wasn't living in the UK and didn't pay attention at the time, but it seems...
