Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

I think it's self-evident, but any argument that tries to discuss the amount of "political lunacy" in a country with a straight face is doomed from the start.

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

I agree and disagree.

There is greater lunacy (or at least political lunacy) and freedom of expression in the US (check out the militias in the Midwest, which have no analog in Europe), but...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

1) "We" have also experienced extremist left wing ideology, and I don't think that McCain is any more like Hitler than Clinton is like Stalin.
2) The US has also experienced pretty right-wing...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

People in North America and Europe get very agitated and self-righteous about Japanese and Icelandic whaling because it enables them to show off their green credentials and conscience without...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

I agree - although Israel/Palestine has had an impact on the average Lebanese, Syrian or Egyptian (not to mention the Palestinians themselves), it's only slightly more relevant on a practical basis...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

Oh, OK, yes, I agree (I didn't really suggest the opposite, I think? Doesn't matter :) ).

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

Hold on, I'm not sure I totally got you there. Can you elaborate slightly?

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

There is also the school of thought that says the whole notion of a Cold War is a fantasy: there were plenty of US-Soviet "hot wars" between the 1940s and the 1990s, it's just that they were fought...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

Neither was Iraq!

In concrete terms, a significant proportion of the "support" for Israel comes in the forms of military aid i.e. US armaments paid for by US taxpayers. A lot of it is corporate...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

But Clinton's husband sent troops to Bosnia and to Kosova, and bombed Sudan, Pakistan, Iraq and Yugoslavia when there was no credible relationship between a threat to the US and the subsequent...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

NuLabour isn't a reference to Newspeak. It's just because it makes it sound like a tacky, disposable product with no content. I've seen it used by both those to the left and to the right of New...

Re: Results & Follow-up: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

But that's not surprising, is it? "I prefer the US political system to the one where I live now" is not a valid reason to be given an immigrant visa for the US!

Point of Order, Madam Speaker: the...

Re: Why do so many European born USC vote for the Democrats?

When did you leave, 1946? Socialism in Europe has been in retreat for the last twenty years, at least. Private ownership of the means of production, and free capital and labour flows are at the core...
