I would guess that their private medical insurer will be excluding it as a pre-existing condition ( i read your message as saying they took the insurance out after they found out about the cyst)....

Agree with that, but it doesn't stop it wrankling - had an aunty who worked hard all her life until in her 80's (towards the end if was just a few hours in the local charity shop doing their accounts...

It could be significantly less than 22% - say someone was earning 10,000, less personal allowance of 4,000 (? about that I think?), only 6000 would be taxable - first 2000 at 10% (ie tax of 200),...
