Re: the Scottish independence issue

She failed pretty miserably then: unemployment was less than 2% higher when she left office than when she arrived.

You decry - and blame government - for a cycle of welfare dependency, but then...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

The same thing has happened in the US:

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Cuts to the UK's bloated welfare bill are long overdue. I'm no big fan if this Conservative government, but I certainly give them credit for attempting to tackle this issue.

And, yes they do have...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Everyone has a choice not to be a non-citizen resident, something which is a privilege not a right anyway.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

American citizens also have to pay US taxes on their worldwide income even if they don't live in the US. So denying their expats a vote would be "taxation without representation".

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Most recent US presidents have got less than 55% of the popular vote. Of course, the electoral college system can convert small majorities into a lop-sided result. I'd describe this result as a clear...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

The Quebec referendum in the mid '90's lost by less than 1%. There hasn't been a "next time" since. I suspect the same will be true of Scotland.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

There was no demand for an English assembly, perhaps because the English were more happy with a parliament sitting in their own country than the Welsh and Scots were. Northern Ireland's parliament...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

it's not all "London-centric". For example, Scotland has a disproportionate nyumber of MPs, which makes no sense at all.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

They could also issue Euro bonds, which might be a good choice if they are required to sign up for the Euro in order to gain EU membership. But the real issue for Scotland is definitely credit risk,...

A very rough and ready calculation in proportion to Scotland's population would see a gain of about £20m.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

In theory, I agree. In practice, I am not so sure. I guess the best hope is that if the vote is for independence, reality will set in and the SNP will see that its economic policies are not...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

A quick check shows it would be marginally cheaper for me to fly to London than to fly to a zero APD Edinburgh/Glasgow (avoiding changing in a rump UK). Somehow I doubt APD would be zero; Ireland,...
