For small transfers use www.tranzfers.com Each transfer costs £7. That is a lot less than if you transfer with Nationwide or Alliance & Leicester.

Yes, 7% is great. But that is their Telenet Saver account. You can only open that one via the internet and only from Australia.

The Westpac Max-i-Direct has an upper rate of 6.25%, which isn't bad...

You can visit Westpac in London to open the account(s), activate them [you "validate" your visa but you "activate" the bank account(s)], and put Australian dollars in. You just need to phone them...

I took my own advice last week and also went to Westpac in London to activate our accounts. Today, one week and one day later, they are "active" - just checked on the internet.

Why don't you activate your accounts in London before you go to Oz?

Just to say that my husband and I have just opened our Westpac accounts over the phone: Westpac Choice and Westpac Max-i-Direct joint accounts.

The Westpac guy also signed us up for telephone...
