I got out of the country before all that hit. My friends from undergrad went through it, though (as teachers, I mean). Some of them are now about to retire and speak quite bitterly about that period....

TBH, I'm not sure that membership of the Big10, Russell Group or Ivy League (maybe not so much Ivy league) has a lot to do with quality of education, especially these days. Research priorities are...

These days it hardly costs anything, you don't even need to buy a book (though there are cheap second-hand copies on Amazon and eBay for all the classes I teach).

e-books is the way of the future....

Yes, I think it depends on the extent to which you expand the boundary between "targeted learning" (only having to learn what's needed to pass the exam, or for your professional goals) and broader...

School isn't the only place education occurs, and I'd say catching someone before they get into university often is a good think, otherwise you might need to uneducate them before you can start...
