The frequent fogs along the coast can be daunting. Driving long distance up the coast during the foggy season is not something I'd like to repeat.

There aren't many places near the coast that are cheap in California. A small two bed, one bathroom would do us fine in SLO. The house we have now is way too big for two

Yes Paso Robles definitely worth considering. I think I could get around 700 for my house but even that wouldn't buy much anywhere near downtown Santa Barbara.... pity though

It's a college town (Cal Poly) but it's only 12 miles from Morro Bay and I like the downtown. Small town atmosphere but with plenty of good stores and places to eat

If I had to move anywhere else within California I'd choose Santa Barbara. Big enough but not too big and with enough amenities that matter San Luis Obispo would be next choice.

I wouldn't mind moving up somewhere near Seattle myself but it wont happen. Family ties have anchored here forever.
