Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

I can't give precise information for Genoa or Milan but in my experience you can sometimes find beans in Asian grocery shops. When I lived in Trento, there were a couple of stores, one run by a...

Closest I've found is panna acida - in my experience it tends to be long-life and thus not kept in the fridges in shops.

Local press reporting that Esselunga are in talks to buy a site in Trento for a new store. No idea how likely it is but might add a bit of variety to the Regina/Poli/Iperpoli hegemony.

Ace, sounds like a film set!

We've noticed round here if you want to get one of the tables in the forest clearings or a good spot with a view, you have to pitch up by about 9am. Usually with a...

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

There's not a lot of cultivation in Trentino, it's mainly berries, soft fruit & vineyards and what is left over is largely left for corn & potatoes. That said, I still find it astonishing that...

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

We were in Innsbruck over the weekend and got a bid giddy when we saw parsnips on the market, so bought a big bag full, half of which we will probably have to freeze. We also got some yellow carrots...

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

I think they're known as friarielli and are quite a common pizza topping in Trentino. I really like them, a nice alternative to spinach when wilted.

I'm with Lorna on raddicchio though - I can't...

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

Very few Brits here, from what I can tell.

There's another Lidl in the Valsugana, might pop in later in the week. There are few things I miss about UK food but a good, strong piece of cheddar is...

She's just got back. Apparently, they had everything except cheddar. Guess what the one thing was that I wanted....

My wife would like to thank you for that link Lorna, she's just charged off in the general direction of Lidl with the aim of filling the freezer with "comfort food".

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

I didn't notice much special Italian food for Christmas (apart from the vin brulè and caldarroste stalls around town) and, being close to Alto-Adige, we get plenty of Lebkuchen and similar biscuits....

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

Last year, we had a tagliere of cold cuts to start, tortollini in brodo for primo and stinco di maiale con patate al forno for secondo. Didn't need much in the way of dessert after that!

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

My wife won't eat honey either but was won over by dipping a chunk or two of mature parmigiano in it.

Re: The Comfort Zone. Favourite food, drinks, where to buy, and recipes.

For a melting cheese, I would highly recommend taleggio, although it's an even better cheese when eaten in its "natural state".

A lot of the Alpine cheeses are made with milk that has been heated...
