Yes. Kind of. NZ needs to export. NZ felt abandoned when the UK entered the European common market, so it had to turn it's eyes to other markets worldwide. Before that , it had a guaranteed market...

Um.......:unsure: No ! Good logic but it doesn't hold up for NZ.
Lamb, for instance, is home grown :p and locally available but is a heck of a price.
Wine, is home grown and locally available...

We have never had Sky even though telly reception is crud here.
