Re: the Scottish independence issue

In the past new countries that don't have a top level domain of their own have used .su on a temporary basis.
(Used to be Soviet Union which, of course, no longer exists).

Re: the Scottish independence issue

All the other EU countries have to agree to their membership before they can join. It's unlikely Spain will agree because of the business with Catalan.[/QUOTE]
Let's see, who else in Western Europe...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

But would it feel the same country if you travelled via Reading and Croydon and Milton Keynes? I submit it would not.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

The root problem is that Britain really has evolved into two cultures, two countries.
One revolves around intangibles - finance, banking, information, computers, business administration and...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

I'm mostly pointing out they could have a Scottish Pound held at parity (one for one freely interchangeable with) the UK pound. Like the Isle of Man Pound. They could hold parity as a matter of...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Oh it totally is.

IoM and UK have the same head of state. Elizabeth IIR is Queen of UKofGB&NI and is the same person as the First Lord of Man. But the Queen is the only constitutional connection...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Not really.
The government has not formally made any similar undertaking with the Isle of Man, yet the UK pound is legal tender there and circulates freely within the Isle of Man.

I'm not seeing...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

It is not binding on the UK government, but the government has promised to honour it.

Historically, the UK government has not always honoured the promises it makes. To put it mildly.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

It would be too expensive to change everything that has UK on it.

So it simply has to be
Short form: United Kingdom
Long form: United Kingdom of Southern Britain and Northern Ireland.

But...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

So, as we get closer, is there any more indication as to which way it goes?

And if Scotland does go for independence then how long before Scotland leaves the EU and problems like this go away:

Re: the Scottish independence issue

It certainly is.
In American law, all powers, all powers, belong to the many states except those specifically enumerated in the Federal Constitution as belonging to the Feds.

Basically,...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Is the sentiment in the Scots independence issue being influenced by the Ukraine situation?

From what I can detect, British mainstream media is (for whatever reason) hiding from the British people...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Duh!

Never thought of that ;)

Perhaps Scotland should settle for joining the BRICS. BRICSIS?

Re: the Scottish independence issue

An independent Scotland could apply to join the Russian Federation, just like Crimea did.

The Kremlin seems keen to invest in new Russian republics, have a lot of oil and nuclear industry...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Of course an independent Scotland could apply to join the Russian Federation. That seems to be a popular move these days. And presumably will be more so in the post-petrodollar era. Solves the...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

On the Norwegian model I assume.

For they would surely would want to remain in the EEA, if only to avoid tariff barriers on exports to the UK.

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Quite.
Their EU membership application definitely can be vetoed (by Spain) if they do not adopt the Euro. To inherit the Sterling carve out from Euro would basically make independence pointless as...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

It's not.
Such a concession could, and would, be vetoed by Spain; that much is certain. If Scotland wishes to be in the EU it must adopt the Euro.
The only other (uncertain) possibility to be in...

Re: the Scottish independence issue

Well, yes they could.
But doing that would not be a shared currency but rather a "dollarisation".
Which is to say that (without permission of the BoE) Scotland could not have it's own central bank...

Sure, Scotland could use the US dollar without problem, just like Ecuador does.

But Scotland could not use sterling without effectively giving up most aspects of independence because few...

The Euro is the only realistic option. But it would be a political third rail for Salmond to say so.

The only other possibility, and it is no more than a possibility, is to throw in with the...

I guess nuclear, solar and wind are just about the only sources for which "use it or lose it" applies. That it costs the same or even less to generate than to idle.
Just about anything else...
