The 6€ activation fee seems like another reason, in addition to the unreliability, to use the device provided by the car hire companies, which was the original topic!

For drivers of foreign cars...

I don't expect a toll tag supplier to know about bulbs etc but I do expect them to know about toll tags.

I have yet to see a definitive statement on their site that their device is a suitable...

Obviously not all of us have a Portuguese (or Euro) bank account or card but a potential snag with the Sanef device must be the requirement to link it to a GBP account, so there may be exchange...

Since I typically incur just under 10€ of tolls per hire, I'm in profit after 3 hires.

I'm not sure where you'll be in Portugal but the Pré-Pago Anónimo transponder from CTT only works on the electronic-only toll roads, such as the A22 in the Algarve. It will not allow you to use the...

Pré-Pago Anónimo (https://www.ctt.pt/financas-e-pagamentos/portagens/metodos-de-pagamento/pre-pago-anonimo.html) is a possible solution but it requires loading with 10€ every 90 days to keep it...
