Seriously. Ask someone for a lift! Or make it worth your while and go to Muscat or Nizwa for the weekend!

My husband gave a lift to an elderly Omani who for some reason wasn't driving between the posts. Smile at some locals as you exit the UAE and they will probably give you a lift!

I think the problem you may have, if the border guards are on the ball, is taking your hire car out of the UAE without the permission of the rental company. You will need to produce the car...

You will cook! It is over 1km each way and no shade, but you may be able to hitch a lift.

Yes Mezyad border a few kms after Bawadi Mall. I'd go extremely early in the morning.
