Re: Retirement in Penang

Well exReg, except the fact that we are living in the said condo unit :D

Saiprasad, best idea is to come out to Penang and look around and see if you like it. There's a lot of places that will...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Yes there will be costs to renew. It's so much for each year. You'll have to check the government website for that.

Haha yes....best to check out Penang first to see if you like it.

All the...

Re: Retirement in Penang

No you don't have to be in good health permanently. Lets face it, who is.

The MM2H visa can be renewed every 10 years on same conditions as you joined. I'm not sure if you have to fill in a...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Yes there is plenty of building in the Batu Ferringhi area. But cannot have it all ways I guess. I'm sure you could find a nice remote house somewhere but then you don't get the infrastructure...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Hi Federico,

Yes you are right, Phuket has plenty of pool villas. We used to have one - now sold. We moved from Phuket to Penang.

Unfortunately for you, Penang villas are very expensive. You...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Hi Rusty and a warm welcome to the forum :)

I am living full-time in Penang and retired, and seems like a good place to be. There's certainly a lot worse.

I know this isn't Penang, but you can...

Re: Retirement in Penang

I guess the winter months are the best months weatherwise - the humidity is not so severe and more sunshine. You can get heavy showers any time of the year in Penang but, I think I am right in...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Try checking it out on tripadvisor. It re-opened not so long ago. Certainly a good location in my opinion if you want Bt Ferringhi. Short stroll to Eden Parade in the evenings - lots of eateries,...

Re: Retirement in Penang

If you're planning for retirement, think about hiring a car too and looking around. You may not get wall to wall sunshine in August and you may get haze from Sumatra. In any case, it's way too hot...

Re: Retirement in Penang

I think these days the Brits and Europeans in Europe find it expensive because both Sterling and Euro have taken a dive, and it may get worse before it gets better uh?

Rich is relative. I know a...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Hey, thanks for your thoughts

Property prices are mostly going up, driven by locals speculating. Foreigners have the 3 year lock-in period so not us to blame, though they tend to try to...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Yes, me too, Davita. I enjoy going down there. I enjoyed living/working there though it's a bit of a pressure cooker to work there.

I only mentioned Singapore as exReg was mentioning, but cannot...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Comparison Singapore to Penang pricewise and otherwise.

We go down to Singapore from time to time. We have found eating out (generally speaking) about double the cost of Penang. Drinks in bars...

Re: Retirement in Penang

You mean the insurance? Well you get what you pay for I think. It's cheaper than the UK for sure.

We went for cheap plans. I'll go and have a look up tomorrow how much my one was, just to give...

Re: Retirement in Penang

Re: Retirement in Penang

Presumably the humidity is not so severe in Florida though? And no haze :(

I think Penang has got to win hands down on food.

Re: Retirement in Penang

If you get the MM2H visa*, you need to get insurance cover for Malaysia (or get a refusal letter). I would say that it's far cheaper than the UK but you get what you pay for quite honestly and of...
