Uk insurers won't insure you if you live in France (but you could insure it at a friends address until you sell it. 3 months is the usual length of stay abroad).

Sell your car in the Uk,buy a French van and a matress eh voila! Camp sites are much cheaper than hostels in the long run,are soooo much better than you'd think,plus you'll have the added advantage...
