Re: recommendations for housing/living in NS

Why don't you consider other areas in Ontario that might be cheaper? Such as Kitchner-Waterloo, Kingston or Ottawa?

Re: Schools in Quebec

Generally speaking, all children of migrants in Québec must attend school in the French language. As mentioned there are opportunities to request exceptions, and as your children are older, they may...

Re: Moving to Montreal........loads of questions!!!

There aren't many four bed houses for rent! People usually buy. That said, from what I've heard, you can get a house on Nuns' Island for $1500 a month.

Re: Landing in Montreal - need a bit of info.

They only have 1 hour of English in public schools - I don't think that's enough to be supremely confident in English.

Re: Landing in Montreal - need a bit of info.

Housing: Central leafy suburbs for 600K - unlikely. Check out though NDG. Otherwise, off-island Brossard on the South Shore is close to downtown and well connected with a great bus service. Also, St...

Re: What's Ottawa like?

Ottawa is nice to visit, the museums are great - but it just seems so small. Really, really small.

I prefer living in Montréal and making daytrips to Ottawa - depends what you want though. If you...

Re: What's the equivilent of [shop name] in Canada?

Tesco, Sainsbury = no equivalent, Canadian supermarkets are in a league of their own: Metro, Loblaws, IGA/Sobeys
Aldi/Asda - Super C, Maxi
Organic = Tau, Rachel Berry, Avril
Clothes = the Bay has...

Re: From Ireland to Montreal

The Ontario and Québec systems are different. They don't have junior and senior kindergarten here in Québec.

Daycare is private, essentially, and they will want you to put your child full time in...

Re: From Ireland to Montreal

For schools, I think we're talking the same thing. I always discuss it in French. I believe that Kindergarten is the same as Reception class in the UK, i.e. the first year of primary. Before that...

Re: From Ireland to Montreal

Welcome to Montréal

So to answer the school question first, your child will be eligible to enter Kindergarten, equivalent to "Reception class (I think)" in the UK as long as he has reached 5 by...

Re: UK bank account while in Canada

I use my parents' address. I doubt most banks would open an account if you don't have a UK address.

My LloydsTSB account has a foreign address - the wrong one. My signature changed over the years...

Re: HST?

Taxe sur les Produits et Services
Taxe de Vente du Québec

I do believe these are the highest in Canada. Still lower than in the UK though. Combined the GST and QST are about 13.5%

Re: Where's my snow?

We might get some snow next week - it's December and thus more likely. Definitely much later than last year!

As they said on Montréal's Q92, summer arrived in November this year.

Re: Salary & Cost of living - Montreal

I think that 60K is ok for a start. As one poster said, it's worthwhile looking at the South Shore (Brossard or La Prairie) for somewhere to live as it's a lot cheaper than downtown Montréal and easy...

Re: Moving to Montreal

Most daycare is French based, but the "educatrices" often speak enough English to communicate with you. It's of course good for your child to learn a second language at this age. Daycare will set you...

Re: type of car to buy??????

Cavaliers tend to rust.

I wouldn't get a domestic car because the spares are cheap - I'd get a Japanese one that doesn't break down in the first place.

Mazdas are a little cheaper than Toyotas...
