Re: Financial advisor for US and UK retirement planning

There is a list on SEC website of registered investment advisors. You could search that for any based in the UK and then check to see if they fit your needs.

Re: Renouncing US citizenship

This is a great summary and really highlights the value of talking to a professional. Some additional information just based on my own experience (GC holder, expatriated and paid exit tax in 2024.)...

Re: US tax on UK rental income

 Thanks for the clarification. I forgot about social security and I think there are a handful of other income sources not subject to the Saving clause in the tax treaty.

Re: US tax on UK rental income

My reading of Article 6 is that rental income is taxed based on the location of the property - which in this case would give primary taxing rights to HMRC, wouldn't it? However, since you are dual...

Re: Financial advisor for US and UK retirement planning

FWIW I've struggled to find an advisor who can speak both 'languages'. This time last year I thought I'd finally found a company that explicitly targets expats in the UK states that they have dual...

Re: Withdrawing US IRA from UK at 52 - penalty and tax treatment under US-UK tre

My situation was slightly different as my IRA provider "forced" a distribution in response to my submitting a W8CE (I was a covered expatriate for exit tax) so I couldn't avoid the 10% penalty....

Re: "To-do" list for moving to the UK?

Find out if there is some kind of Reuse (ie charity or second hand) shop in the area you want to live, as that might be a source for non-IKEA furniture like table, chairs, drawers (obviously you'd...

Re: "To-do" list for moving to the UK?

While I was till living in the US, prior to moving back to the UK, I picked up a prepaid SIM in Asda on one of my visits and I got 3gb of data, unlimited minutes/texts for 5 pounds a month, which...

Re: Tax burden for US 401k to Roth IRA rollover under UK FIG regime

As a non-accountant simply having read through a lot of HMRC mumbo-jumbo over the last few months, I would say that an IRA does not meet the legislative definition of pension that appears to be used...

Re: Tax burden for US 401k to Roth IRA rollover under UK FIG regime

Okay, I've been working through this with my UK accountant, and the official stance of HMRC (at least, the individual who formally replied to our question) is that a US 401(k) is an overseas Employee...

Re: UK-UA Dual Tax Agreement Article 17 Treatment of 401K vs IRA

With regards to how your custodian will (or won't) apply withholdings, your best best would be to contact the custodian. I suspect that a lot will depend on whether you have claimed any treaty...

Re: Moving back after 15 years

Remember how you felt when you first moved to Australia? It's a bit like that, except weirder. I came back after 20+ years in the US and initially got frustrated at the number of things that seemed...

Re: How to link a Wise account to a Vanguard Roth

Apologies if what I originally said seemed contradictory. The IRS flowchart is your best guide to the US treatment; and the UK-US treaty states that qualified withdrawals that are tax free in one...

Re: How to link a Wise account to a Vanguard Roth

OP originally asked about "how you avoid tax penalties" and as far as I know these cannot be avoided through any treaty e.g. if IRS was going to levy a 10% penalty on Roth withdrawal because of the...

Re: Non UK resident driving your own car

FWIW, I had about 15 years no-claims in the US and struggled to find a company that would accept it (I don't recall if I tried Aviva) but then I got an online quote from Allianz that was...

Re: Non UK resident driving your own car

This might be obvious to others, but how can you own a car in the UK if you are non-resident? Don't you need to be resident (or at least have a UK address you can use) in order to have it...

Re: Tax burden for US 401k to Roth IRA rollover under UK FIG regime

Caveat: I am not a tax expert and have been trying to figure out the new FIG rules myself, with the help of a UK accountant. This is what I think I know.

Yes someone who arrived in 2022/23 could...
